We've all heard the saying, "It's the best thing since sliced bread." But exactly how long has sliced bread been around? According a recent announcement from Chillicothe, Missouri, sliced bread has been around for 75 years. On July 27, 1928 the Chillicothe Baking Co. placed an ad announcing that they were now selling wrapped loaves of sliced bread. On January 1943, at the height of World War II, the government ordered bakeries to stop slicing bread because the country needed airplanes more than it needed bread-slicing blades, which did not go over well with the public; the ban was lifted 3 months later. Unfortunatley, the city doesn't have a tourist spot: a beer bottler bought the bakery building and dumped what he thought was a pile of junk in 1960. Only later did he learn it was Rohwedder's bread slicer. If I had to slice my own bread, Id be missing fingers
