May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I don't know... maybe started by the same folks who started "fat tuesday"? An excuse for people to go to down n.o. to get naked and drunk and eventually lose their wallet or purse?

St Patrick's Day is in celebration of the death of the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. SPD was brought to the US in 1737, when Boston's Irish people celebrated with a parade.

And beer! Let's not forget the beer. I'm savoring myself a Killian's right now, and even making boxty. Suck on that!

Now to go get pinched for not wearing green. 😀

Something that always gets me.
On Saint Patricks day you're supposed to be in church, not in the bars and corned beef and cabbage isn't even Irish. I guess someone made up the customs as it went along.

St. Patrick's Day isn't a day of obligation. It's an Irish celebration for the most part. Church may have been open for a service, but it's not a big one unless the particular parish has something special going on.

I'd like to wish a happy St. Joseph's day as well to any Sicilians who may be here on TT that day as well will be here in a few days.

Happy St. Patrick's Day (belatedly) to everyone here of Irish descent (or not).

Here, as soon as this young lady is through, have a kiss at the Blarney Stone!

Oh yes, if you've got a hangover, I understand that drinking lots of water helps!

Ireland is a beautiful country. I was there on vacation a while back!

Yech! The Blarney Stone?! Do you know how disgusting and dirty that thing is?!!
Stupid tourists go and kiss it for luck, where a bunch of silly drunk Irish men stand a ways off, laughing their heads off for no apparent reason.
The real reason they're laughing?
Last night, they all took aim and peed down on the sides of the Blarney Stone so it'd all collect on the bottom; the tourists struggling to kiss their piss the very next day.
That's the truth of it, basically.

St. Patrick's Day is set aside to celebrate the life and accomplishments of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. In his teens he was captured in a raid by Irish slavers that attack his home village in what is now Wales. He served many years as a shepherd slave to his master. After about 6 years, he received a vision from God instructing him where to go to board a ship to England and home. He escaped from his master and was able to find the ship, just where the vision lead him. Later, back home in Wales, he received another vision of vast numbers of letters from Irish folk begging him to return to Ireland and lead them to the Christian faith. He then began his studies as a priest went to Ireland as a missionary and lead a nationwide crusade, leading the people from Druidism to the Christian faith.

There are many legends of how Patrick cast the snakes out of Ireland and cast out the devil himself from a cave in Ireland which made the devil so mad he bit a chunk out of the mountain. That spot is called "The Devil's Bit" mountain to this day.

The wearing of the green is an American Tradition, not an Irish one. It was started by Irish Americans as part of their celebration. The pinching? No idea.

Patrick was one of the first and few ever to unite the entire Irish people, and they celebrate his great life on the anniversary of his death. If you want to read something truly inspiring, read "The Breastplate of St. Patrick." It's a great peace of writing and a part of my heritage.
