The highly anticipated new Harry Potter movie, Prisoner of Azkaban, is due out June the 4th. If I can manage it I will be going to see it the Sunday or Tuesday following it's release.
Is there anyone else here as anxious for this movie as I am?? If my daughter understood about movies and releases and such she'd be jumping to see it as well. She's not even 3 but she's crazy for Harry Potter. We saw a movie poster at the mall the other day and she squeaked "I LOOOVE Harry Potter!"
Something which is bothering me a bit is the blurb in Rolling Stone (a small segment of that magazing apparently still pertains to entertainment stuff). You would think that when picking someone to write a bit about this movie that they would have picked someone with a slight interest in at least picking up the book, or at the very least someone who doen't appear to have a bitter attitude toward the series.
Huh? The first two films did an excellent job of squeezing rather large and detailed books into movies of watchable length. Without the books even they stand well on their own as decent movies. On top of that, the casting was brilliant.
Once again, a resounding...Huh??
Puberty and hormones didn't feature at all in book 3. I understand it is a favorite passtime of film makers to insert sex and romance into every book to film adaptation they make (ex, Arwen) for the sake of spicing up the story. And to be honest it was a great fear of mine that they would try something silly like that as the Harry Potter cast got older, I hardly think the stupid comment above was necessary and only proves that the writer knows nothing about the series. There is enough to try to cram into a movie as it is without adding sexual twists to it.
Edit: Go easy on the sex? What sex? as I said above there IS no sex in book 3. Harry is being tracked by a mass murderer, I hardly think he's sneaking make-out sessions behind the Quiddich field. Hormones don't come into play until book 5 and even then it's done rather descreetly. Just because the movie features 14 and 15 year olds doesn't mean it needs to go the route of every other flimsy, sex based, teeny bopper movie out there that is made SOLELY to parade young girls out in tight clothing so they can look cute and make out (ex Hilary Duff, Olson twins, every other pop singer/actress). This comment really bothered me. I know I can dismiss it because I know the writer is a moron but some people who arent as familiar with the story may take this to heart and judge the movie by it.
I am going to assume that the writer is hinting that this new director isnt capable of directing a light hearted, fun kiddie movie. Well...if POA is going to be a light hearted, fun kidddie movie I don't wanna see it. Book 3 is the darkest book in the series up to that point as is arguably the most important, pivitol part of the story so far. Though it has been marketed to children, and the movies are certainly a bit toned town, it is hardly an entirely kiddie-safe series.
I dont know anything about this director and havent seen the movie they are referencing here. But if they are insinuating that he will make this movie dark, scary, and with the depth the story deserves, then I'm all for him and I hope he directs #4 and #5 as well.
Anyway...rant over. I am REALLY looking forward to this movie. As with most people, #3 is my very favorite book in the series. It is there that two of the greatest and most beloved characters, Lupin and Sirius, are introduced and it will be a true test to translate them from page to screen.
So....what are your thoughts? Anyone? I'd really love to know I'm not the only one on the edge of my seat waiting to file into a theater which will be overcrowded by the inevitable band of 8 year olds. 😛 Personally I think it would have been better marketed to a slightly older crowd but that's not where the merchandise goes. *sigh*

The first two Harry films wimped out, even though they cashed in.

What's Promising? Puberty. Harry, Hermione, and Ron have reached the age where magic tricks aren't everything.
What's troubling? They'll go easy on the sex to protect the franchise.

Key Player: New Director Alfonso Cuaron - he gave us the three-way in Y Tu Mamd Tambien - is sure to bring fun to the Potter Party
