A little tidbit I was thinking of, maybe with a brain fried from test taking lol.

US dollars are always called the "Greenback" or "Green", but, has it ever occurred to people that, with the new counterfeiting measures, money really isn't "Green" anymore.

I'll go through dollar by dollar denomination of US Money.

The $1, About the most "Green" of them all, since its unchanged for decades,.

The $5. White and Black, with Stars, and a big pink 5 on the back

The $10 Kind of peach, orange, and red

The $20,. Maybe the most green of the larger bills, but also with blue, and white mixed in.

The $50. Has purple and pink in it, with a red white and blue flag.

The new $100. No one has one yet, but from the pictures of the new one, kind of gold in places.

Can anyone tell me why these bills are called "Greenbacks". They seem to be every other color but.

The old denominations of bills, yes, all green, but these, anything but.

Thoughts?

Maybe the U.S. wants its currency to be as fashionable as the euros...lol..idk just joking.

The 1$ bill is about the only green bill left, the others are not green any longer and rightly so with so many people trying to make counterfeit money and all. The 20$ bill is green but not like it once was before, and I can see them changing the colors yet again in a few years or so.

what I wonder is why we continue to make pennies? they have pretty much no value and it makes me wonder why we spend money for such a worthless piece of copper.

Dru, when I was a kid in summer camp, we had counselors from England. I distinctly remember buying 1 pound note off one of them. It was greenish at the time. One counselor showed me a 5 pound note of his, and it was blue. This was.. 30 years ago, so I don't know what the UK money looks like now.

The nickname "greenback" goes back to 1862 and refers to the paper currency issued by the U.S. during the Civil War. The back was literally green:

Angel..I hear they do plan to phase out the pennies, not sure exactly when, but some advice is save them anyways so when they do phase out you can go to a junk yard or someplace like and turn them in for the copper weight.

Never thought of that., dru.

I've heard that pre 1964 coins have silver in them. I have a few dimes here and there, but I'm just holding on to them for now.

The dime, quarter, and half dollar coins were 90% silver up to and including those minted in 1964.
At Friday's closing price of silver, here is what they are worth (in melt value, not as rare coins):

Roosevelt dime, through 1964: $1.54
Washington quarter, through 1964: $3.86
Franklin half dollar, through 1963: $7.71
Kennedy half dollar, 1964: $7.71

Wow, mils., thanks for that information.

I don't have any quarters or half dollars pre 1964, but dimes, yes.

You are very welcome.
Don't spend them as dimes; as you can see, they are worth about 15 times face value.

Cool.

I might decide to sell them at a silver buying jewelry shop or coin dealer.
