Actually I had a mechanical flying bird in 1974. Made in France, it was sort of like a little balsa or styro airplane,..... though made of plastic and powered by putting hundreds of turns on a big rubber band and letting it go. The wings would flap and it would fly around erratically for a half-minute or so. I got it for my cat, of course.

Pretty eerie how the thing so resembles an actual bird in flight!
