Any program I try to open these with plays ONLY SOUND no video; that is Media Player Quick time real Internet explorer. Do I need some codec?

These clips are created using Quicktime.. make sure you download the latest version from www.apple.com/quicktime. If that doesn't work then you are missing some other codec. Try checking this out too: http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/3849p1.html

you can easily play the video in windows media player if you change the file extension to .wmv 😉
