I need to know what disks to get for transfering Videos from my computer to another. There are so many types of disks on the store shelves I really don't know which to buy. the generic ones will transfer pictures but not videos. this is for my mom so she can have vids of her grand kids and great grandkids. Any ideas?

How do you plan on transferring these videos? Will you be transferring them as video files she can play on the computer? Or are you going to transfer them in a form where she can put the disk in her computer and play the videos like a DVD?

If it's the first, and I recommend the first as it is easier, get a USB flash drive. They come cheaply at capacities higher than disks. Here is a 16 GB model (four times the capacity of a standard DVD) for $70 and here is a 4 GB model (a bit smaller than a DVD) for $15. You can reuse them essentially indefinitely (unlike a DVD which, even if rewritable, will become unreliable with multiple uses).

Basically I need to know more about what you want to do, eh?

I have transfered the kids pictures to her computer by copying one at home then downloading the disk on her computer and saving it to her pictures. She still has that copy at her house. I want to do the same with the small vids of the family and kids by burning the file on my computer then using the CD to permanately download it to her computer, and save the disk in case it is needed again. The videos are from 5 seconds to a minute long.

She lives in the country and doesn't have internet access...and won't until she gets AT&T to "run a line down here like they promised, dammit."

the only other thing I can think of to do is transfer everything from my camera directly to her computer before I forget and delete the pics and vids from my camera. I guess what I am asking is would a disk such as DVD+RW do the trick? There are a lot of different types of blank disks and I'm not sure which to use.

Okay, so you want to transfer the files to her computer. Then get the flash drive thing I was talking about. Any store that sells blank DVDs or CDs will have flash drives of varying sizes. They are simple to use. You plug the drive into your computer and it will install itself. You'll then see it pop up or can go to "My Computer" and see it listed beneath your main hard drive. You just drag and drop or copy and paste the files you want to transfer to the USB drive, take it to the other computer, and copy them from the drive to her computer. It saves time (copying to the flash drive is faster than burning a disc) and requires no special program to burn the disks. You then don't need to worry about the type of disk, for all flash drives are the same in this respect.

If you are dead-set on the disc thing find DVD-R. They are standard DVDs and will be readable in most any DVD drive. You can only write to them once (unlike the flash drive or DVD-RWs) but I can't recommend DVD-RWs because they have a tendency to fail randomly in my experience.

Thanks, HDS! You are very helpful and I appreciate the effort.
