I am computer stupid and this may be a simple problem so help will be appreciated. A fellow member sent me a file to view in .doc but I can't get it to open. I am using Microsoft Vista if that helps you. Is there software already installed that I need to activate or is there a program I need to download that will automatically let me read .doc when I download it from email? Thanks.

If you do not have Microsoft Office installed you can't open it, I don't think. There is a program in Start>All Programs>Accessories called "Wordpad" which may be able to open it. Run Wordpad, choose File>Open, and change "Files of type" to be "Word for Windows (*.doc)". You might then be able to browse for the document and open it, although being able to do this may require that Microsoft Office be installed in the first place.

If Wordpad fails or you can't find Wordpad (Windows Vista may differ in what it has/where it is) try CrystalLight's suggestion. It is nearly sure to work, although you won't be able to edit the file. If you need to edit it in any way grab the free OpenOffice.org suite and install it from http://www.openoffice.org/ The "Writer" program is the one to use if you choose that suite.

Thanks, guys! Wordpad at least opened it to where I could read it. I may try Crystal's download later when I get more comfortable with this new machine.

There is a free program called AbiWord that opens .doc files as well. You might be able to use that to save into some other formats. Not sure if they have a Vista version yet though.

The site URL is

http://www.abiword.com

Thanks, Kurch! I'll look into that one also.
