you know its funny to me the amount of poeple on sports shows that actually buy into the idea that hip hop is a valuable asset because it has a positive influence on sport.

In my oppinion sports probably is the best expression of this ultraviolent art form, but the couple thousand athelets that get paid to dunk a ball through a hoop to nelly dont concern me all that much. the 10s if not hundreds of of thousands that rape steal and murder listening to it concern me, and the countless number of people that have centered there lives around buying into the stereotype that there is no other way for certain types of people to gain financial independance is either entertainment or sports.

even if it is the "CNN" that some claim it to be, the greater question is for any group of people is it healthy to generate an entire culture around a stream of unending negativity.

You know about 10 years ago my ex and I adopted a young black teen friend of our sons, because his group home closed it's doors and he wanted to graduate from his high school with his friends. Well every day my basement was full of teens trying to create new rap music, because they saw it as their way to riches ( did you see the movie Hustle and Flo ). One of my customers was Grand Master Flash and I put them in contact with him , but the two of us couldn't talk sense into them.Needless to say none of them is a rap artist(?) today. This myth about rap being a way out of the ghetto is hypnotizing . I think it is just another attack on true conservative America and while I am not in favor of censorship ( that is a double edged sword ) I think the reality of this myth needs to be put in the limelight. As far as the sport connection I am not surprised. Sports are nothing but a distraction to keep the populace 's attention from disturbing headlines so the pieces of the puzzle cannot be put together. The creed of my life thru military service and till today has been " question authority".

really, what branch of the military did you serve in, i have tremendous respect for everyone that was in the armed services.

With the number of non critical thinking drone that I work with it is interesting to see a person adopt a creed to question authority from the service. Pretty cool
This belief that the only way out of th ghtto is to make it as an athlete or a rapper it extremly pervasive and damaging. All kids regardless of race dream of becoming some sort of superstar which is normal.... but some of us nevr let get go of that belief concentrating on far off dreams rather than building a solid infrastructure for the rest of their lives. I think a lack of role models in the inner city is partially to blame. I'm a black male and after my degrees are finished and am making close to 6 figures...theres no way i'd move to the ghetto. I do think that it is a respnsibility of mine to go back however and show some of the young people that there are other ways out through education. In my suburban neighgorhood if I see someone with a nice car or house...i'd assume "he/she is probobly a doctor/lawyer ect. When that chld in the ghetto sees the same thing they'd assume "he/she is probobly a rapper/drug dealer/ athlete"....so it's logical that that's what they'll aspire to be.
I think it's also the parent's fault for not putting enough emphasis on education. There's nothing wrong with going to college and writing rhymes after class. I had tons of buddies that madeit their hobby. Of course we were lucky wenough to have the capital to invest in education......
Sadly I understand that if I had no money for school...no positive role models to look up too... no one pushing me to succeed....and in an enviroment that has a hold on it's people like a black hole...pro sports and hiphop would appear to be the only way out. I think the airforce is a good way out...but it's not for everyone. This unfortunate problem is hard to solve

Sorry it took so long to reply I worked all weekend. I was in the army but when asked to test I transfered to Special Forces. The army seemed full of robotic clones , in the Green Berets we were encouraged to work alone or small units . You have to speak a foriegn language and have an above average IQ ( not bragging ) . 1.5 yrs. Vietnam , the rest stateside. One day I'll tell you about , a group of Green Berets worried about military take over of our people. Govts. don't run like some think it does.

That's one of the reasons the NBA has enforced their dress code this year, where the players need to where at least a collar shirt and a coat. They want to move a way from the "hip hop" image that has come over the NBA in recent years....where players show up to post game press conferences in do-rags and throwback jerseys, with all their bling.

I think GQ is right, where it is a lack of a role model guiding some of these kids. Their only perception of making it big, or getting out of their situation is through sports, rapping or drug dealing. Where, if they only had a parent/guardian/grandparent or role model to just tell them, get your education first and foremost, then chase your dream. And if that dream falls a little short, you still have your education to fall back on. (or something like that! 😀 )
