Hopewell's Last Confession- Live

I still can’t believe I’m going to do this.

Next Saturday (the 22) will be Cheap Date Night at the Peaceful Gazebo, an attempt to infuse some diversity and creativity into the Mayberry retread I call home.I read a (non-tickling) story I wrote and was very well recieved. I haven’t been able to come up with a new story due to my work schedule, so I’ll be doing Hopewell’s Last Confession. Only this time I’ll be doing it in my poet’s shirt, seated at an antique writing table (courtesy of Gail, the Gazebo’s owner), and reading it by candlelight- accompanied by music, of course.

I sure hope this gets videotaped- because no one’s going to believe this!

Duanne, I wish I could be there to video tape it for you and to see it for myself. I'm really interested to hear how it goes. Please do a follow-up post to let us know.

It could've gone better.

Well, let’s see…

I had absolutely no time to prepare due to the crazy hours I’ve been working, so I had to wing it. That didn’t bother me. In fact, I took it as a challenge and was looking forward to it.

I was scheduled to go between the sets being played by the two bands (one of which has Gail’s son as a member and is in the 3rd round of the Chicago Emergenza Band Festival competing for a recording contract and a US tour. WOO-HOO! http://www.hollus.net).

Unfortunately, the bands finished early at about 11:00 PM, and when they were done, so was just about everyone else. About three fourths of the crowd left. I did get someone to tape me, but it showed me trying to talk over the people left and people passing back and forth in front of the camera. Some leaving and not coming back.

And I have a sneaking suspicion that the beer everyone was guzzling all evening didn't help matters.

I was (am) frustrated, but I’m trying not to be bummed out about it. Gail apologized and said I said I did good. A few others said I was outstanding. She told me not to be discouraged, that she wanted me to try it again next month. Hopefully, I’ll have better time to prepare and she said I’d be scheduled earlier.

Take Two


Well, I got my second chance this past weekend. Gail asked me to read at an event she was hosting. I was located in a little more intimate setting (around a campfire). The beer was flowing again, but those that did pay attention appreciated it. I did get some interesting reviews:

"Dude- this is pretty erotic."

"It left a little something to the imagination. It wasn't blatant porno." 😀

"Kinda good... kinda disssssturbing... but not bad."
yes, he was drunk.

Afterwards, a few of us toasted Smores around the campfire and talked, then the drunks came back with... something other than beer and that's when I knew it was time to leave.
But it actually went better than last time.

Wow I just saw this. I think its awesome that you would get up in front of people like that and read. I am just sorry to hear that you werent given your due respect. At least you got some feedback. Way to go!

Way to go duanne. Regardless of the turnout, you had the nerve to do it, and that counts for a lot. good job.
