the problem is... I can’t seem to open any secure pages. online ordering, online email (can get around that one w/ my Outlook Express for some reason tho)... things like that. it’s really becoming pretty annoying.

just before this started happening to me... I installed a cable modem, a firewall, a new anti-virus, (deep breath) Norton Systemworks 2003 and updated to ie 6. yeah, I know... one thing at time and work out the bugs. lesson learned 🙂 but, dammit, I wanted it now now now! 😀

it seems like some kind of setting thing to me but I don’t know what or where. I have tried disabling, uninstalling and reinstalling one thing a time but nothing seems to fix it. I even went back to ie 5.5

anyone have any ideas?

thanks,
Ayla

ps I added a 19” monitor, surround sound and 128mb of RAM the other day. I‘ll be cracking codes at the Pentagon soon. 😛

Try this:

Go to Tool,

Click Internet Options

Click on the Security tab

Towards the bottom click Custom Settings

Towars the bottom the the next widow there is a pull down menu set to the low setting, hit reset then OK.

You might need to restart the browser for this to take effect.

I have no idea if this will help, and don't go to any sites you don't trust with the settings like that.

just tried it, guitman, and no go. 🙁 rebooted after the change and everything. thanks for trying tho. 🙂

ie6 is very glitchy as an upgrade, have you tried double clicking my computer, control panel,add/remove programmes....double click on ie6 in programme list,it`ll give you the option to repair itself....it`s a long shot but😉 ...btw...zonelabs firewall?,if it is try setting security to medium

no trace of ie 6 on my computer. I tried having it repair itself before going back to 5.5 tho and neither one did the trick.

the firewall is Norton Personal Firewall 2003. it has an ad/pop-up block on it and I tried disabling that too. I am so stuck! lol

thanks, t s s. 🙂

What version of Windows do you have? I have Windows XP, you can do a restore to a place where it was working ok before up upgraded.
Good look!

Ayla,

Firewalls are kind of tricky sometimes, especially if the computer you have is somewhat older. I tried Zonelabs firewall on my computer which is only 450 Mhz and it crashed up bigtime. Some how I manged to remove the program and normality was restored. I think you may just have to lower the security setting for your firewall though. Call up Norton and see what their advice is. Or maybe check their website it should be listed on the box the software came in.

Tracy, I have Windows 98 second edition. a Windows upgrade was not part of my upgrading frenzy lol. Norton’s Systemworks did have GoBack as part of the package and that sounds like the XP feature you are talking about. unfortunately, I installed it after the firewall and have since uninstalled it (I just can‘t leave stuff alone! lol) because it ate up too much of my hard drive. I will check out that link you posted tho. thanks. 🙂

kurchatovium, my computer is only 2 yrs old, so it should be able to handle most of the stuff I throw at it. should... 🙂 and my copy of the Norton package... didn’t ummm.... come with a manual. 😀 I don’t think the fine folks at Norton would appreciate a call from me. no sense of humor those corporate types... I have it set to alert me and ask what to do every time it encounters something questionable. but it does store my choices... maybe I should look into the ones it has stored to memory? maybe I accidentally told it not to allow that kind of page? (thinking out loud now 🙂 )

I appreciate the pointers. I’ll keep plodding away and if worse comes to worse I’ll go on a burning spree and reformat. just trying to avoid all that. I have everything just about how I want it and starting from scratch would make me nuts.

oh... btw, kurchatovium, where’s THE THREAD? I didn’t think it let you out alone...

For those without manuals ahem....

Situation:
When placing your order online, you see the error message "Page could not be displayed."

Solution:
This error can be caused by the following:

You are not connected to the Internet
Your browser does not support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, SSL is not enabled, or the encryption data is corrupt.

You are not connected to the Internet
Please connect to the Internet as you normally would, then retry your order. If you are unable to connect, please contact your Internet Service Provider.

Your browser does not support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, SSL is not enabled, or the encryption data is corrupt
For additional information on SSL, contact the publisher of your Web browser.
If your browser does not support SSL, you must use a different browser that does support SSL or update to a more current version of your browser.

NOTE: Current versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape support SSL.

If your browser does support SSL, and it is disabled, you must enable it. Read the Web browser documentation or online Help for instructions on how to do this.
If your browser does support SSL, and it is enabled, the encryption data may be corrupt. Read the Web browser documentation or online Help for instructions on how to repair this. (In most cases, the repair consists of reinstalling the browser software.)

If you are SSL encrypted you shoud see a little lock picture at the bottom of your explore window. The web address should also be https://.... Hope this helps Ayla.

THE THREAD is out and about and is deeply touched by all the attention it is getting.

the address shows up in the address bar just fine (https:/ and all) I just keep getting that stinking “The page can not be displayed” page... maybe I should bug one of the sites that won’t work for me for help?

psst... the edthray won’t get ealousjay... will it? posting in another edthray and all... (sentient threads don’t speak pig-latin, do they?)

Here's another idea. Try installing different browser, like Netscape or Mozilla (both free). If the problem still occurs, it's a problem with one of the other programs you installed.

I like guitman's ideal. You can browse Symantec's database I think. I would just avoid any online chatting with them. Their address is
www.symantec.com

THE THREAD won't get jealous so long as you keep posting to THE THREAD.

guitman, great idea! I'll try that right now and see what happens. thank you.

and when I am done... I will pay a visit to THE THREAD. it calls to me... (besides, I hear there are Happy Pills... ) 😀

YAY!!!!! YAY!!!!! YAY!!!!!! Netscape worked! so it IS a problem with my ie! thank you so much!!!!! now I can order through Netscape until I figure out what is up w/ my ie. or I may just like Netscape better since it saved the day. regardless... thank you so much!

I'm just glad I could help. From what I hear, IE has a flaw in its SSL anyway making them non-secure. I'ld use Netscape for any purchases made on line anyway.

IE non-secure? Yikes!

Ditched Netscape a long time ago, but perhaps I was wrong to do so...

😀 fixed my ie! it was my cipher strength. I had none. :idunno: ...but now I do!

thanks again for all of the help.

Cipher strength...hmmm

That occurs if the Schannel.dll, Rsabase.dll, or Rsaenh.dll files are missing, damaged, or of the incorrect version. Just curious how much reformatting you had to do in terms of reinstalling. Did you completely overwrite or could it be fixed by repairing the appropriate dlls? Q

Q, I had to get rid of any trace of ie from my computer and then reinstall. I tried a patch but it wouldn't fit and I won't go near my registry. ...I mess up enough stuff on here without going that deep! lol

next is a zip drive! 😀

TTD, computers don't give advice... they give headaches. 😉

Editing your registry is like playing russian roullette with 5 of the 6 chambers filled with bullets. Not a good ideal unless you are a computer expert. So basically Ayla it was a smart move not to mess with it.

Registry Editor

I used to do a lot of manual editing down there, but as you say, it's not a spot you wish to trek into often. Here's a lnk for a great regeditor/cleaner, but it isn't designed for Windows ME or XP...sorry all you "current" peeps.

Q

I know enough to know when I don’t know what I’m doing... 🙂

Socrates: He who knows and knows what he knows not is wise, you
should follow them.

He who knows and knows not what he knows is asleep, you
should awaken them.

He who knows not and knows what he knows not is ignorant,
you should teach them.

He who knows not and knows not what he knows is a fool,
you should shun them.

Clint Eastwood: A man's gotta know his limitations.

By either standard Ayla you are truly wise.
