talk about excitement!!!!! that was one hell of a game!!! MY 49ers posted the second best comeback in all of NFL playoff history. i was watching the game and cussing because they were playing like the Packers. but then, they started acting like the 49ers. i loved it when Michael Strahan was telling Terrell Owens to look at the scoreboard. if i was Terrell Owens, i would have found Strahan after the game and pointed the scoreboard to him. hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

now the 49ers go to Tampa. should be interesting.... man, what a comeback!!!!

missed field goal

Freakin giants. The laces were in. THEY WERE @$@%#@%#@$ IN.😡 😡 😡 :sowrong: :sowrong: :sowrong:

Funny that it was ten years ago that the Bills pulled off the biggest upset...

What pissed me off was that they didn't let Terrell Owens just get flagged for the taunting, rather than act like a bunch of kids and get offsetting fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct....twice. I have nothing really against the Niners, but Im no fan of Terrell's, haven't been for some time. Just one wish....that he tries that shit down in Tampa...to Warren Sapp. 😀

Why in the hell didn't the holder just spike the freakin' ball on a botched 3rd down kick?!?!? They would have had another shot...

Ah well, at least the Jets are still hot.

It's gonna be an interesting Divisional round.

I still can't believe Cleveland blew a lead as well. A Big One. That right there, my friends, is the importance of a running game. The Browns could have run out the clock on two occasions, but were forced to throw. Pitt's run D against Eddie George and Steve McNair ought to be something to see.

A hockey game...

That was quite a testosterone show out there last night. My favorite happened after Owens incident # 2, on the dead runback. Some 190 pound cornerback was overcome with the fight club mentality and decided to take on one of the 350 pound offensive behemoths on the side...lol...like watching a bear cub attacking his mama. Helluva game, and since I root for Buffalo it was fun to watch both sides in a classic seesaw battle. But if I was heading up either of these organizations, I think I'd be a bit displeased. :sowrong: Q

I like the Giants and 49ers equally. So, I wasn't really rooting for one over the other. But, I was glad the 49ers pulled it off after seeing the Giants turn into little spoiled brats. They deserved to lose! I thought it was good when the Giants started slapping thier own guys around for getting into skirmishes. They threw away the game with unsportsmanlike penalties and that botched hike. I agree with Dave that the ball should have been spiked. Oh well. Maybe next year, they'll learn to keep their cool.

That was a FABULOUS game except for the kiddie fighting. That's no way to set an example for the younger generations. I hear they got fined after the game and they should have.

I'm a 49er faithful and was on the edge of my seat watching that game.

Onto Tampa!

about Terrell Owens..... the guy is a great receiver, but some of his antics are, well, out of line. however, some of it is pretty funny. you have to admit, the "Sharpie" incident was funny. i couldnt stop laughing on that one. also the time he scored a TD, and grabbed some cheerleaders pom poms and did a little dance. that was great!!!

but when he went to the "star" in the middle of the Dallas Cowboys' field, that was wrong. yes, Terrell Owens is a hothead. yes, he is quite immature. but because he is a "superstar" he will get away with it. look at Randy Moss. enough said......

now in the playoff game, if you look at the replays, Terrell Owens should NOT have been flagged when he knocked the Giants defender out of bounds. the guy was still INBOUNDS when Terrell hit him. Terrell was flagged because what happened moments earlier. it was actually a legal hit. it looked brutal, so they threw the flag, so the what the ref did was understandable. what was stupid was the Giants retaliating. they only hurt themselves.

as for the field goal. yep, the guy should have spiked it, but because i am a 49ers fan, i think he made the RIGHT decision in trying to throw it to an offensive lineman!!!! on to Tampa!!!

Owens...

The play had been whistled dead, and the players, unless they JUST came out of college ball, should all be aware of the fact that a missed 2 point conversion leads to a dead ball situation. Owens is a jerk and quite a character, albeit a talented one, but viewing it as a neutral party, his antics are borderline to say the least. At least he provides entertainment value and a LOT of highlight material for the sports shows, in both senses...lol. Q

First and foremost (and I'm a big Giants fan), they lost because they couldn't defend a 24 point lead in the second half. The pass rush in particular sucked.

That said, word is the holder made the correct play. Only a player taking a direct snap from center can spike a ball to kill the clock WITHOUT being called for intentional groundign which involves a mandatory ten seconds run off the clock (ie - game over).

Finally, word is the NFL has privately apologized to the Ginats for the officiating on the last play. The holder attempted a long pass to offensive linemen Rich Seubert - who was a LEGAL receiver on the play - who was dragged down on the play by a 49er lineman downfield - 3 flags are thrown. Everyone assumes it's offsetting penalties - pass interference Niners and illegal man downfield Giants - and games over - EXCEPT that Seubert is a legal reciever and the game can;t end on offsetting fouls - Giants would be entitled to another play! Zebras get together later and claim that all three flags were thrown for illegal man downfield and that they were flagging ANOTHER Giant linemen, not Seubert, and that none of the three were flagging pass interference (yeah, right - no one's watching the ball; the whole crew is watching for linemen downfield?) Again, privately, the league has told the Giants that pass interference SHOULD have been called but that it's a judgement call. Privately there's a lot of speculation that pass interfernece WAS called and the officiating crew blew the rule and did not know the game can't end on offsetting fouls.

Like I said, we lost the game because we couldn't defend a huge lead (or make a snap etc etc etc) but it seems clear we were entitled to another try at the kick (not that I'm confident that Junkin, Bryant and company would have made it but they should have had the chance).

Not that I'm bitter, understand.

Thanks for the post sceej56. You saved me from having to type all that.😀 I just read all that at ESPN.com
I think that it's a shame that any team should lose a game due to a blown call, even tho they did blow a 24 point lead. :wow:

Perhaps you should read the NFLs' statement on the last play of the game. There was NOT an ineligable receiver down field and there was a pass interference that was NOT called and there should have been an untimed down allowed.
The Giants were "SCREWED" and should have won the game.
Even though the Giants screwed themselves by even letting the game even get to that point by changing their game plan in the second half instead of continuing the same plan that got them a 38-14 lead!

Even IF there had been an ineligable receiver down field, the defensive pass interference should have been called and a game cannot end on offsetting penalties or a defensive penality.

i didnt get a chance to read the NFL rulebook, but if i remember correctly, offensive linemen are NOT eligible receivers unless the ball is tipped by a defensive player first. the linemen of the Giants wore #69, and unless Shockey (#80) or the other TE (#89) changed jerseys and gained a bunch of weight, how was #69 eligible???? the ball was NOT tipped. just need an explanation....

49ers will beat the Jets for their 6th Super Bowl and "Mooch" (as he is called) might get that contract extention he was looking for...

I agree with dave (as usual), I think TO should have been tossed. I hope he gets fined, and I also hope someone big with pointy shoes kicks him in the nuts. He is a good athelete, he just needs to learn to have a little bit of respect for the game. Also, idealistically they should have a rematch. They won't, of course, but San Fran will lose in Tampa. At least, that's the way I predict it. I also agree with dave about the browns. They should have won that game. I'm a Carolina fan, and i know ALL ABOUT blown leads. They should have run the football instead of going deep on 2nd down. If they were to pass, it should have been a play-action. How could you not bite, given the circumstance? Credit given to Pittsburgh though, they deserved the win; I'm just dissapointed with Cleveland. Although Holcomb did one hell of a job throwin the football.

Scoobs Predictions for next week:

Tampa vs Niners= Tampa
Eagles vs Falcons= Eagles
Jets vs Oakland= Jets
Steelers vs Titans= Steelers

think i'm crazy? you're probably right. Any given sunday...

Thumbs down to the NFL and their so called Officials.
The NFL admitted a mistake and are doing nothing about it.

Way back many moons ago, I remember in Baseball, the infamous "Pine Tar" game between the Yankees and Royals.
MLB admitted error by its umpiring in that game and subsequently that game was picked up where it left off and Corrected said mistake.

The NFL should give the Giants that same courtesy and give them the extra down that they should have had instead of just saying...Ooops, sorry. Fly home safely.

The NFL and its' officiating is an embarassment to sports.

A sad day indeed when a Zebra dictates who wins and looses a professional football game. Especailly a Playoff game!
I could not care less who wins any of the games now since I won't even be watching a single posession of any game for the rest of the playoffs INCLUDING the Superbowl!

My own personal boycott as it were against the NFL and its' officials who couldn't referee a Flag Football game let alone a professional one.:sowrong:

I like Jim Fassel a lot but I think the Giants need to get their act together on special teams. You could give that field goal kicker ten tries at making that goal and he would be lucky to get it in once. Also there was more than one lineman downfield. I think about three from what FOX said and probably those other guys were not eligible. I don't know if that matters or not. Still I would say the refreeing has gone downhill over the past few years and they should get some people who are halfway decent. Anyway if the Giants get someone who can hike the ball and someone who can kick it. They will have a really great shot at making the superbowl next year.

Primetime - it gets confusing but (better we stick to gorgeous chicks wrestling each other into ticklish positions!), you're right, offensive linemen can't recieve a forward pass unless it's tipped by a defender BUT JUst because you wear a number in the 50's, 60's or 70's does not make you an offensive linmen. League rules require offensive linemen to wear those numbers to avoid confusion; however, the "offensive line" for the purposes of ineligibility only covers the center and the guards and tackles (one each) to his left and right (unbalanced line gets even more complicated!). Often, on plays where the team needd an extensive amount of bulk to block (typically field goals and very short yardage situations) teas will send more tna five offensive linmen onto the field; the extras line up off the lien as wingbacks or on the line as tight ends. They can;t chnage their jersey so they "report" to the official that they are playing back or end that play and the referee notifys the opposing team tht they are eligible to handle the ball as backs or receivers that playm - most famous example was when the bear used to line up Refrigerator Perry as a fullback - they used him to carry the ball but he could have caught it as well. And in case you haven't guessed. your's truly is an old offensive linemen (twenty five years ago now, yeeesh!) who lived the linemen's dream and scored a touchdown on a tackle eligible pass reception ... and it's been all downhill since! A regular Al Bundy!

Congrats to the 49er's on a great game. Yes, the NFL was wrong, but it's in the past now, and like TTD said, the Giants didn't stick to their game plan. I hope the 49er's beat the Bucs and the Raiders defeat the Jets! 😀

From what I read, the guy in question reported to the officials that he was an eligible receiver. Now, I have no allegiance to either of the teams in that game, but if Tagliaboo-boo had any balls, he would get the Giants on a plane back to San Francisco and replay the end of the game, as they should have done to begin with. There's no guarantee that Bryant would have made the kick if he had another chance...hell, he shanked the one before it so badly that it practically landed in the bay...but at least it would give the Giants some hope...and some payback for being royally screwed.

my two cents...

If you cant protect a 24 point lead in the second half, you deserve to lose....🙄 🙄
