How did Tom Hanks create this douchebag Chet Haze?

Tom Hanks seems, in interviews and social situations, to be a really decent and level-headed guy. Obviously you can't know a celebrity just through the media, but usually the truth leaks out around the edges if nothing else, and Hanks seems like a sincerely down-to-earth guy who is humbled by and grateful for his own success. And he comes across as an intelligent, articulate, and mature person who one would assume is capable of raising a child.

And yet, somehow this:

I'm all for the concept of interracial cross-culture, but this is just absurd. What does a rich kid from Beverly Hills have to be so angry about? Maybe Dad didn't get him his 1st Mercedes until he was 16? Man, that kind of abuse really toughens a kid against society.

Actually, Tom Hanks has a reputation of being a LEGENDARY mensch on the production side. Most of his "nice guy" image is a combination of upbringing and public persona, but when he's in charge of a project, he's an unapologetic prick. Strangely, he's actually open about his mercurial nature, but since you have to be on set while he's managing to see it, almost nobody outside the industry is really interested in it. Also, typical Hollywood assholery is often akin to psychotic, volcanic rages resembling I.E.D. on PCP (Joel Silver, Scott Rudin, and Russell Crowe being the patron saints of this type of behavior), while Hanks' is more like Steve Jobs' "call-an-idiot-a-fucking-idiot-to-his-face" sort of confidence-crushing condescension that makes you wanna jump off a bridge in shame and defeat.

Mensch means a good guy, by the way, a really admirable and worthy person. I wasn't sure myself, so I just looked it up 🙂
