How Do These Start

Have you ever wondered about some of the silly sounding comments that people pass.

"oh its all right for her sat on her ass in the office, if she went out on site it would be a different story"

(Well what else can you sit on but your ass.)

{OK ok ok the wise guys we know the smart ass remarks about women sitting on gold mines lol.}

Then there is this "light of day" " and in the cold light of day"

(well there is dusk and dawm and night but day is mainly light.)


My favorite "there is light at the end of the tunnel"

(Lets hope its not another bloody train.)

Wher do they get these sayings from.

Do you know some we could start a whole book lol.

There are tons of "canned phrases" that just get my goat. They're things that I avoid using, so I can't presently think of many, but here's a (non-exhaustive) list...

"So-on and so-forth" along with its often mispronounced brother "et cetera and so-forth" which normally comes out "ecsechra and so-forth." Ugh.

"For all intents and purposes." This one pisses me off. Why not just say "Practically?"

Saying that a thing is "ineffectual" when it's not, it's ineffective. Ineffectual is in regards to something operating over time, or simply not having the ability to address an issue in the first place. Ineffective addresses an immediate issue. A politician can be ineffectual during his tenure, but a vacuum cleaner may be ineffective at getting that hairball up.

Any claim of irony when it may actually be anything but.

Oh heavens, there are tons more, but like I said, I don't use canned phrases, as I think they make a conversation feel... Less important. Like someone can't bother coming up with the most direct and concise way to communicate something, so they fall back on these groan-inducing things.

It also forces me to keep on my toes linguistically.
