Censorship Blocking From-Work Net Access
Let me throw in my political two cents on this one -- back at the old Delphi forums, my friends Wildcat and Jason started a forum even though neither had a computer at home. I joined it and became the co-host, also without a computer at home. We all used terminals at work or universities. Then, along came the "Children's Online Protection Act," and suddenly our access to adult sites was CUT OFF, like a steer's b*lls.
I am finally online at home, so I have ended up in charge of our various websites. We USED to have about 20% of our members visiting us from work/college/etc. -- now it's about 3%, and most of those are in Europe.
There are two organizations fighting for our right to Internet access: one is
http://www.eff.org and the other is
http://www.epic.org I strongly encourage everyone to visit those sites for important legal updates on Internet censorship and privacy issues, including spy-ware and non-government intrusions.
Also, **webmasters**, you can make YOUR site an official "blue-ribbon" site by following the instructions at EFF. I added the logo to all three of my sites, and our membership has increased greatly. The logo tells your visitors that you are professional and that you care about free speech online.
I hope this is an issue where almost all of us can agree.
Love,
