Sell things on craigslist or open your own store. You're not going to find
anything that you can do that will magically make you a bunch of money.

Contrary to what the media says, the Internet isn't some magical place where your every dream comes true. By starting a business that only exists on the interwebs is, for most people, a one-way ticket to fail because they assume that the moment they put the site up, people will be beating down the doors to get whatever great product it is that's being sold.

Never do they ask themselves... "But how will they find me?"

The truth is that people have to want to find whatever it is you're selling before they'll look for it. The sad truth is that internet ads don't work. Nobody is going to search for "dog breeding" and then end up buying something from your website that deals in overpriced pet toys just because it showed up in some search window.

Hehe... $35 for a chew toy? 😀

Then!! There's the simple fact that right now is a bad time to try to sell people anything. We're all cutting back and making what we have last rather than splurging on things we don't need. I'd assume you know how that goes 🙂

Another factor is that most people don't think that ordering things is convenient. Why use your credit card, pay shipping and wait 3-5 days when you could hop in the car, run down to Walmart*, pay cash and get it there? I see "easy" being thrown around a lot when it comes to selling stuff on the webs. Sure. It's easy to wave your hand around and click stuff. It's just that it's convenient to get the thing you need right now.

It's also a pain dealing with people like FedEx and UPS who suck at delivering things to residences.

So if you do decide to start an internet business, be sure of what you want to sell. Make certain it's not something that people can just go to the store and buy... otherwise they will. Ensure that it's something that folks need, and that you sell it reasonably. Remember that you're still going to want and need to charge shipping unless you want to eat the charges on that 😛

Most of all, remember that just because you start what you think is a great business... that doesn't mean that anybody else will care.

A business online is the same as any other business, it's just the way you handle it that's different. The structure of starting the business remains the same.

It starts off with an idea, then development and testing on that idea and then once you've got an product/service that you're happy with you'll need to set up an establishment. In this case, it would be a website where you'd advertise, present and sell your product service, just like how a yong businessman buys a small shop to begin with.

The reason people are making hundreds of thousands on the internet is because there more advantages for selling your product/service online than there are to buying a store. The main advantages are greater accessibility, wider advertising coverage and cheaper maintenance costs of the shopping location. This means they can produce better turnovers and expand quicker. 😛

I could go into greater detail about all this, but to explain "how to start up an internet business" would take way too much time and effort. This is something you'd probably be better off buying a book about. There's lots about. 🙂

Was just about to say that. Sex is the one commodity that never loses value and is always in demand.

Are you into youtube? If you have a successful youtube channel... successful meaning many thousands of views per video, you can become a "partner" and make money with them. I'm not sure how much, as I'm not a partner, but you don't exactly have to be a genius to get thousands of hits per video. Just hopped up on caffeine, attempting to appeal to spazzy junior-high kids. It seems to work... :lol

If you want to make money on the Internet, simply hop into your time machine and set the controls for 1996!

ETA: Please pardon my sarcasm. My cynicism trumped my better judgment when I posted this response. I didn't mean to diss you or make fun of your aspirations.

YouTube stars barely make enough to pay for gas. Or so I've heard from Lisa Nova. Plus YouTube is harder than you think. It's worth a try, but I'd put it way down on the list of things to try.

Blogging is another idea, but it's not great. As a blogger myself, trust me, there is basically NO money in it. You can get a Google AdSense account and they pay you a small amount every time somebody clicks the "ads by Google" on your blog. But here is the deal, you can't encourage people to click the ads and you can't click them yourself. People hate ads. If you're lucky, or clever, you'll make maybe $15 a month from Google AdSense.

Now, you could get an AdSense account and put the adds on your blog, and then use another computer to click the adds. You can tell your friends to click too. I'm sure that is what a lot of bloggers are doing. However, you might not need to if you get around two thousand hits a week. But don't count on getting that many hits. I'm not encouraging you to cheat Google, I'm just saying that is what some people do.

So yeah, if you're ambitious and have a lot of time, try blogging but don't get your hopes up.

What Fleet said. Youtube's chief value is as a promotional vehicle.

As for blogging (I have a few blogs myself) it seems to this observer that unless you're massively popular like BoingBoing, it's either just a pastime, a "soap box", or again, a promotional vehicle. If you're a writer, you can give away select bits of your work or exclusive short pieces to entice people to buy your books, attend your readings. etc.

Fact is, in this society it's easier ("easier" being only a relative term) to earn a living by moving large objects around a warehouse or occupying an office cubicle than to engage in truly creative enterprises.
