Someone asked me how i quit smoking in a thread..rather than hijack that thread..which is something i would never ever dream of doing...😉 i thought i would start this thread..and anyone with similar tales can add their story to this thread if they so wish...

ok two years ago this january i made an appointment with my doctor..this was at the urging of my husband..he had told me about a drug called Chantix, which worked by you continuing to smoke as you get off the cigarettes..i did not want to quit..but my husband nagged and nagged at me..said he wanted me around etc..i had increased my cigarettes to fourteen cigs a day, up from seven or so...which was over half a pack a day..i told the doctor i did not want to quit..he said it won't work then..but he was wrong..

Chantix works by blocking the nicotine from the pleasure portion of your brain..and it also makes you nauseated..by week three i was getting so nauseated after smoking a cig, that i finally had it..i tore up the remaining cigarettes and tossed them...

Chantix was a three month program...you must follow the directions to the letter..meaning you must take the pill with a whole glass of water..then eat a wee bit of something after..it was taken off the market i believe, last year..i believe it caused some thoughts of suicide...the pharmacist was impressed that i stuck with the program..many had tried and failed..couldn't take the nausea..it's not for everyone..but it was the only cure for me..

Two years later i am still smoke free..however anytime i smell cigarette smoke, i want one..i have to fight that urge weekly..

I quit for David..not for myself..

Those of you who have quit..what worked best for you?

Yes, Chantix is not a harmless treatment and requires wanting to quit and a good screening. It can do some nasty things to your mind as you get off the nicotine. It's not very everyone, but works well in those that can't quit with the gum, patches, etc.

Or! How I learned to stop smoking and love the bong. 😉

I tried nicotine patches, never had trouble stopping at first but after two weeks i'd be back again, i think if i could have managed on four a day ok, but i was on a pipe, cigars, and cigs, i chain smoked with a pipe, one day i had a pack at work bought local, duty free ones in the car, off the back of a lorry bought in a bar in the house, they all tasted different and i just bined the lot, twelve years ago now but i tried for years to stop, the patches worked but i used treble the amount, any body thinking of doing it DO IT NOW,or at least REDUCE.if i can help just ask it' well worth it.

First of all, I'd like to wish everyone here who's trying to kick tobacco the very best. (Way to go, Izzy and Meteor!)

I went to chantix.com, and it's apparently still on the market. I'm glad there's another secret weapon in the war against tobacco-junkiedom, though that suicidal-ideation thing gives me the shivers.

For the record, I've never used tobacco products, not intentionally anyway. I never crammed a cigarette into my mouth and lit it up. What I did do, and do every chance I got, was go to concerts at bars and clubs (not cover bands, national acts like Tony Trischka, Mad Professor, Jayne County, and a host of others). Trouble was, EVERYBODY in a bar or club smoked, and they smoked a lot. The smoke was so thick, you could cut it with a machete! Once it got so bad that in the dead of February, I had to leave the club proper and watch the show from outside, through a service door. Then those candy-assed liberals in the New York State government banned cigarette smoking in bars, restaurants and clubs. Seeing shows in bars and clubs is a much, much more civilized experience now. No longer do I go home smelling like an ashtray and feeling like my lungs have been sandpapered.

Yes, Chantix is still on the market, requires a prescription and does work. I've seen over the years with my patients that cold turkey is the best and most effective way, but the other products (gum, lozenges, patches, Chantix, buprorion (Wellbutrin or Zyban) are good for those that can't ick it cold turkey.
