How popular is Formula 1 racing in USA?

I know that NASCAR is probably the most popular car racing for most Americans, but I have no idea if any of you also watch Formula 1 racing?

It's rather popular over here in Europe (especially Italy and Germany), and in Brazil. The current champion (Michael Schumacher, Ferrari) makes about 30 million $ per year, not counting the commercial spin-offs. How much do the NASCAR racers make? Does ESPN (or any other sports channel) broadcast Formula 1 races? Just curious... 😎

its the same old septic problem...........

......they are not really in to sports that involve playing against other countries. Also NASCAR racing is,technologically speaking, stone age motor racing, so I dont think the old septics will fancy turning out against the likes of Schumacher and Ferrari, just to get their arses kicked every two weeks. Septics need to feel that they are gauranteed a win before taking part in any international sport, other wise the toys come out of the pram, and its the old addage "its my ball and I am going home"

So Halty boy,we will have to wait for NASA and the U.S. military to pool their annual budgets before they have a serious go at F1.

Y'know, I thought they have F1-style motor racing in the USA. They call it "Indy Car". Why have F1 when you have Indy Car and NASCAR. And funny how there are no American F1 drivers...

Indy car? That involves racing round an oval track with no other turns or obstacles doesn't it? Some might say it's not an easy sport but it's slightly fishy that one of our F1 guys like Nigel Mansell goes over there and whups ass in his first year!

One gripe about F1.............
Why is the greatest driver in the world always a dirty, cheating bastard? First Piquet, then Senna, then bloody Schumacher. Does it never end?

We Do have formula...

but it's televised late at night, more as a filler on the sports networks...usually around midnight, but if you're into it you can always tape it and watch the next day.

Not sure about that BJ............

....I dont recall Mansell or Hill winning any prizes for gentlemanly conduct! but then again they were British "cheating bastards"!!!

I never remember them receiving a knighthood for it, no. But I don't remember either of them cynically and deliberatley running an opponent's car off the track, so they could'nt get vital points either. Dunno about Piquet (mostly before my time), but Senna and Schumacher have done that on multiple occasions.

Maybe I just have a selective memory.

I remember one time that a driver got killed in a smash in Belgium or somewhere. I really hated Senna and I bellowed at the TV, "I REALLY F***ING HOPE YOU GET KILLED LIKE THAT TOMORROW YOU CHEATING, BRAZILLIAN B***ARD!!!" (I was about 13 or 14 at the time.)

The next day I arrive home from school and everyone is looking rather strangely at me and giving me plenty of distance. I'm sure you can guess the rest.
For about a month afterwards people kept checking for a birthmark on the back of my head. Something about looking for numbers.........

Formula 1 - Absolutely! We follow F1 (both cars and motorcycles but mostly cars).

My son's ultimate experience was to go to Monaco for an F1. He won the trip and it was an experience he'll never forget. His hero was Senna. Unfortunately, we lost Senna the weekend before but Garry was there for the tributes.

We've worked the F1 races in Detroit and back in the early 80's in Las Vegas as corner workers.

Jan, you have the inate ability of making me feel guilty, you know that? :idontwann :idunno:

Oh how I envy you and your son for that experience, QB! I've only been to one race in Austria (which is nearer to my home than the 2 German tracks), but Monaco is still a dream for me. The tickets and hotel prices there are prohibitive!

Lime: Most races happen between 2 pm and 4 pm CET, which means about 10 pm to 2 am American time (depending on your time zone) till the results are in. Maybe they'll show the US or Canadian Grand Prix earlier. For the Australian Grand Prix, we have to get up at 4 am... 🙂

Guilty BJ? I'm sorry. Didn't mean to. Garry really liked Senna but only for his driving skills. Senna's attitude sucked Big time! If you can separate the two, it's easier. I personally find most of the F1 drivers to be "above it all" and look upon us, the corner workers, as the lowlife. That's ok. I'll still run out there and save their lives if I need to. That's my job!

I currently work with one of Senna's former team managers who's a total jerk. We've gone our rounds for sure. He's inches from being slapped for some of his comments.

I love F1 cars, and Indy. The US folks that don't know much about racecars don't realize there are significant differences between F1 and the Indy Cars. After all, to the unexperienced eye they look so much alike. The aerodynamics and the engines alone are significantly different.

I can tell you that the Indy cars, although they run on the Oval tracks quite a bit, they also do road courses as well, i.e. Long Beach, Vancouver, and Laguna Seca (My home track), etc. Each year I get the enjoyment of standing right in front of the grandstands at Laguna Seca and I get to feel the rumble in my feet and the piercing winding of the engines as they fly up the Start/Fi nish Straight. It's INCREDIBLE.

I met Mansell at Laguna Seca. Didn't care for that man at all.

We did have an American F1 driver at one time... Anyone remember Mario Andretti? And Michael had a go at F1 also but since the European teams are so "anti-American" they gave him inadequate equipment to work with. He finally came back to Indy/CART.

So, I'm sorry BJ. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I didn't particularly like the man either, but I did appreciate his skill.

I think it's a celebrity thing though. You get in the limelight and it all goes to your head. But with the limelight comes a huge amount of freedom that you have to give up. You can't go anywhere without hoards of fans following you. I'll take my regular life over that anyday.

😀 Mansell does have the market cornered on sounding like the world's most miserable bastard doesn't he? He even beas Alex Ferguson to it.

As for Senna, I'm glad I didn't step on any toes there. Suprised no-one mentioned my Damien-like ability over him though. 😛😉
