How to combat hunger?

So, probably alot of people here on the TMF are already aware that MANY FAMILIES across the nation are already below the poverty line when it comes to how much income they make and certainly alot of people are aware that hunger (especially among children) is a pressing issue. Many children rely on school lunches to get a meal during the day. The question is, how to help combat this.

One idea I had was a massive social media campaign to get fast food chains, restaurants, and other corporations that sell food for profit to offer a free meal every five to eight days. They could make a card that people in low-income households could apply for which they would then swipe at the restaurant and boom, a hot meal that can help sustain them! Is this a good idea and does anyone else have any ideas on how to combat hunger in the USA (as well as around the world)?

Volunteer at or donate to soup kitchens/food pantries? We donate to the pet food pantry at work so people from low income families can feed their pets as well. I think bringing attention to this cause is a great start. Grass roots programs I think have more power than people think and probably fare better than a national campaign. I'm also not sure how nutritionally valid a hot meal from a fast food franchise would be - yes it puts food and nutrients in a person's body, but would it provide necessary vitamins/minerals needed by growing children? Interesting discussion.

There are cities where people have gotten fined for feeding the homeless. That needs to stop. Also,the previous mayor of NYC,Bloomberg?,would not allow food banks in NYC. I posted that in P&R some years back.
