After surviving Hurricane Lili, I remember fleeing New Iberia, and thinking, "I feel like I'm fleeing an invading army..." But, I just had to go up one city. Some people fled two or three cities. Some go one state if they really want to get away. BUT, the hurricane, any hurricane or storm, lasts only a day. Maybe two if it is really horrible.
I got back, and we were without electricity and cable (which meant, news, information) for a few days. We had water. People start getting pissy when they don't have water or electricty for even a few hours, much less days.
How would this country handle an actual invasion by foreign troops? We'd have to flee, IF we were warned in time, but not just up one city, but up states. Would we be able to afford gas? What if our cars could't travel that far? What if the gas stations were destroyed. Hurricane Lili damaged power stations. An enemy army would DESTROY power stations, along with water plants (which hurricanes can't really damage at all) and hospitals and city halls.
We couldn't just go back home after a day or two. We are a good people, mostly, mainly because we care for our sick and weak. The best judge for a country is how they take care of the weak, not how strong the people are. How badly would they be affected? How many would defend them, and how many would turn tail and run? How many of us, in the big picture, would fight, or haul ass?
We had scalpers down here already, people selling generators that normally cost less than $500 for $2,000. I can perectly understand people fleeing. But how many Americans would become evil (or already are) and actually hurt their fellow citizens - show the enemy where the weak are hiding so they can be killed, turn traitor for a price, take advantage of a horrible situation and make it even worse?
And then we couldn't return homes after a few days. Our cities may not even be there anymore. To rebuild after a hurricane is to repair a few roofs, pick up tons of branches. Imagine having to rebuild the ENTIRE house, street, and everything on it, stores, all utilities, everything?
Hopefully that never happens, but who knows what the future will hold. Any thought, more fears?
