I Need help finding a program that hides files!

I need help finding an ''Easy to use''(Free)program that hides Files so my friends at school that come over cant find my stuff that i want hidden from them. Mainly the reason why i want a program like this is so i can Hide my ticklin clips that i get off of kazaa! and keep in mind that im NOT no computer pro at all. so it would be cool if the program was like a drag-& drop thing plus something that the program would let me type in a password so the next time i wanted into the program to watch my clips or what have yeah all i gotta do is type in the password. well thanks everyone for your time Bye🙂

Since...

Your presence here means you MUST be at least 18 years old why are you even worried about hiding files from other people. You're an adult, act like it.

If you have Windows XP or 2000, you can set permissions on the folder where you keep this stuff so that only a particular username has access to the folder. You can even create a new Windows account to use just for surfing and downloading the "interesting" files.

Hide them in a directory

Find a deep directory that no one ever uses and add a new folder there. Name it some thing like 0x01011101. Then put your clips inside. Finally change the file extensions on the clips so that if your clip is called tumtkl.rm rename it tumtkl.xpw. Even if someone finds the clip and double clicks on it it will not play for them atleast not until they change the file extension back to what it was. Bad news if you have Windows XP because you cannot do this. Also do not forget to clear your most recently viewed file queue of any clips and files you don't want anyone to see.

Try partitioning your hard drive if you're up to it. Most people don't bother looking through a second drive. The windows profile is a good idea too. Don't worry about those who aren't interested in helping you. They haven't really heard or people turning 18 while still in H.S. Keep doing your thing.

hey if you right click on the file then a menu will pop up click properties when it opens put a check in the box marked hidden then click apply. You may have to restart your computer but it should make the file invisable. If you want to see it again go the view on the toolbar then go to folder options move over to the view tab and click on veiw all files. I hope it helps. You may have already known this but hey i tried. Oh yeah and Neatron you dont have to be so mean man just chill out.

Novus i took your plan i first clicked on Cabs then 2nd i clicked on APPS then i finally made the new folder in Acrobat i even saved the new file as the 0x01011101<-- like this that you gave as an example but when i droped my first clip into the new folder it said something like Drive Access is denied Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. What does all that mean?? Novus do you know or anybody else know? thanks

Put underscores around folder name

No one ever clicks on a _0x0111111_ folder name because the number usually leads to binnary files which no can read. The trick I am trying to show you is how to fool people into thinking that your hidden clip folder is a binnary file. It is my fault because I did not tell you about the underscores. If you don't put underscores around the folder name you also fool the computer into thinking the clip is a binary file. Without the underscores it treats the folder as a binary file which the computer in not going to like. If that does not work use the filename 010101110x0.

If you have any more questions please ask me.

I have no need to hide my clips, but if I did, here's what I would do... (Note that this might not work on other versions of Windows. I am running the ever-crappy Windows ME.)

1. Create a compressed folder.

2. Drop your clips into it.

3. Right-click the folder, and select "encrypt."

4. Windows will prompt you to enter a password for encryption. Do so, but make certain you remember it.

5. When you want to open something from the folder, you will be prompted for your password. HOWEVER, if you want to be all secretive, make sure you change the names of the files to something innocuous, like "bunnyrabbit.wmv" or something, because people will still be able to open the folderitself.

6. To add new clips, right click the folder, and select "decrypt." Then enter your password, and wait for the files to decrypt. Dump in your new clips, and re-do the instructions to encrypt the folder.

This will effectively seal off your "collection" from the casual observer...

Problem with encription

The problem with encription is that if anyone stumbles across the folder they will know you are trying to hide something and may question you about it and become more suppicious. My trick works in that it lets you hide stuff without leting people know you are trying to hide stuff.

You could store all of your stuff on a removable disk like a Zip disk or CD-RW, then keep that hidden or locked up.

Like Shrivaya says, keep your stuff on a zip disc (if you can) and you can protect anyone from viewing that by right clicking and selecting the protect feature. Just put in a password. If your disc is found, no one can see what's on it without first right-clicking on the zip disc icon and selecting "unprotect until eject".

Hope this helps.

I don't know how to hide files, but I want to clock in with a disagreement on Neutron's response. I consider it perfectly legitimate for people to want to keep some parts of their worlds private, including what kind of video clips they like to watch. There's nothing un-adult about it. We need to remember that our own paper is not necessarily the answer key with which to correct everyone else's.

Windows XP Password

On Windows XP (and probably earlier versions as well), you can password-protect the "administrator" account which is probably the account you are using when you turn on the computer. You would then need to make sure that the confidential files are in the "My Documents" folders, not the "Shared Documents" folders.

WARNING: The Windows password can be bypassed with a little effort, so if you are going to leave the computer unattended for a long time in the company of other people, this may not be secure.

The ultimate protection is to transfer sensitive files to CD-R or RW and then keep the CD under lock and key far away from the computer.

Magic Folders

TummyFan2003,
Send me your E-mail address and I will send you a program called Magic Folders. What it does is actually hides the folder your clips are in which can be stored right on your desktop. The folder does not even show up physically at all, until you hit a special 3 button combination like Ctr-Alt-A (you can set your own 3 button combo). Then you have to enter in a password of your choosing, and then the folder reappears and is just like any other folder. I use it all the time to hide sensitive data. The nice thing about it is even if they look through your hard drive with windows explorer or command line they still will not see the folder.....it's exactly like it never existed. Do a google search on Magic Folders or just go to http://www.pc-magic.com/des.htm#mf to check it out. Good luck and happy hiding.....

Why don't you simply not let people rummage through your computer. I don't go around trying to spy on the files of my friends computers. I mean... come on!!!

What's going on here???

Very well said, WIP. What an abominable notion to equate privacy with childishness. If anything, keeping such material private shows a greater sense of responsibility.
