I need some advice in buying my new PC.

Just found an AMD Athlon XP3200+ PC that retails for under eight hundred quid. INCLUDING VAT!!! 😱 (VAT = Vague Additions to the Total)

There's gotta be something wrong with it!

They probably skimped a lot on the other equipment that comes with it.

A 5400 rpm hard drive is unacceptable. 7200 rpm is the standard.

A Geforce 5200 FX won't do if you want to be able to play 3D games
fluently in the next 18 months. If you want a Geforce, at least go for a 5600 FX.

Also, with a 400 FSB processor, you might want to go with DDR400 memory. The increase in performance is not spectacular (maybe a few percent) but it won't do any harm and the price of DDR400 is almost the same as DDR333.

The fact that they didn't mention the motherboard probably indicates that it's cheap, although that's doesn't automatically mean it's a bad board.

So on the whole, the only real drawback of this config is the hard drive.
The graphics card depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend on it.

Hrmmm, they don't sell DDR400. Seems they skate a bit close to the edge with detail. I have to admit them not mentioning the motherboard was bothering me too. I was impressed though,by them not only installing the full version of XP, but providing a complete CD for it too. Not a recovery CD, but the programme CD! Not many companies will risk the "wrath of Gates" in such a frivolous manner. Heh heh.

Here's the specifications for a PC I got a quote for from a different company. I think this might be the ultimate blend. It's only a 3000+, but there ain't such a huge difference between that and the 3200+. The price for upgrading it is horrendous however; a hundred and fifty sodding quid. Upgrading a 2800+ to a 3000+ would only be about thirty pounds. Typical market ploy. Hoping there's plenty of dickheads who'll go for the best model on the market, just because "it's the best and I want it!" Quite a little earner I expect. :disgust:

This sounds like a good config. Only you list two TFT monitors?

A hard drive buffer is cache memory.

Two monitors? There's definately only one; a 17" TFT. I mention it twice because "TFT" is part of the model's product name. That might be why.

What the heck is cache memory?😕
