I want the truth...the actual truth, (well at this point its kinda hard). The Ripper character has interested me (no not in the murdering the prostitutes) but the story, the unidentification, the never being caught. The Ripper in my eyes is one of the most?possibly the greatest serial killer out there or in history.

However i wont the story, the real story behind this person, and what actually happened, and if they ever found out who he was other than a surgeon. I want to know the case itself, and read about everything that the detectives had in 1888-1900's about him.

(i promis i wont kill anyone, remember only interested in the case, not the idea of murdering prostitutes). I really would like to know about Jack The Ripper.

The latest theory that I heard was that he was some high society London doctor.

Patricia Cornwell, famous for her Kay Scarpetta series of mystery novels, herself a forensic pathologist in real life, decided to tackle that same question in her book "Portrait of A Killer: Jack the Ripper, Case Closed." Have yet to read it, but I plan to. Here is a link about it to her website (delete the spaces):

it's not that he was smart, but everyone else was, and is, incredibly stupid

Apparently most reviewers find her book wanting.

Ahem he escaped via a time machine to present day Los Angeles..:stickout

well this subject has always been debated over here some say he was the Royal Families Doctor others say he was Prince Albert some ppl even claim that it was some American Doctor but whoever he was the Royal Family have never actually revealed who he was , whoever he was they really don't want ppl to know cos of wat might happen if we found out so i'm sorry TIP but i very much doubt that we'll find out in this lifetime but whoever he was he must of been asociated with the Royal Family

yes, it's believed that he was a high society doctor or surgeon of the time, but he wasn't super slick or anything, just one lucky bastard that knew the area well. there were times witnesses and cops barely missed him. i studied the story in it's entirety back when i was 10, and watched the recent documentaries.

he was the kind of killer that would never stop. he felt he was doing a service to the world, and wouldn't stop, so something must have ahppened to him, he probably fell ill and died, or was arrested for another crime altogether.

according to some findings by the police chief at that point the american doctor was a prime suspect but sayin that alot of ppl were suspected in the murders so no one can say for sure

What if J the R was just a violent pimp? Or madam collecting money from the streetwalkers? It'd be a letdown, the papers made such a mystique about the ripper...as they do now.

(warning- can o worms opening)

In movies, why do serial killers come back to life? (Fri 13th etc) Because they murder- in the twisted logic of popular myth, this gives them powers. In reality, these twisted monsters are just very hurt, imbalanced, insane people...boring old sociopaths...

u do make a good point slaver but like i said we wont find out in this lifetime

I like Babylon 5's take on Jack the Ripper. It portrayed him as a guy named Sebastian who thought he was chosen (aka the divine messenger) and wanted to send a message, etched in blood, to everyone in London about sin and decay. A race of ancient aliens found him (the Vorlons) and showed him just how wrong he was. He ends up doing over 500 years of work for the Vorlons in penance for his crimes, always hoping the Vorlons will finally let him die. As "Sebastian" walks away from Sheriden (Captain of Babylon 5 Space Station and the one Sebastian was sent to test by the Vorlons), he says to him:

Good luck to you in your holy quest Captain Shreden. May your choices have better consequences than mine did. For I am to be remembered for all eternity for those consequences of those choices. Remembered, not as a hero, not as a savior, not as a figure head, not even as Sebastian...remembered only...as JACK!

The episode ends there. Chilling stuff no?

The idea of the unkillable serial killer began with HALLOWEEN (1978), also the first of the "holiday horror" movies. John Carpenter wanted to do an update of the Bogeyman myth so he made Michael Myers a sociopathic child ripe for demonic possession or empowerment. This new horror concept proved so popular that Hollywood soon had copycats coming out of the woodwork: Jason Vorhees, Freddie Krueger and undoubtedly others that don't immediately come to mind.

The next step was to create a more believable (human) serial killer who is not unkillable but is too smart to be caught or killed: Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, M.D. If it turns out Jack the Ripper was also a doctor, then clearly medically savvy serial killers have what it takes to avoid or at least eventually escape the police radar.

If you pay attention to modern crime dramas on TV, the most watched episodes almost always have serial killers in them. It's the Bogeyman fascination.

If you wanna talk "versions" then i like the one told in the show "Sanctuary" as he is a person who can teleport anywhere, much like Marvel's Nightcrawler. and he commits these crimes and can teleport away, narroly avoiding detection.

but back to the truth, i honestly believe that he was a mad surgeon, that was forced to stop due to unknown consequences. he obviously knew the area very well, ruling out some foreign visitor.

Why all this fuss about the guy on "Threes Company" who lived with two girls and had a landlord named Mr. Furley?

Oh wait, that was Jack Tripper, never mind. 😉

lol oook.....anyway i agree with u norm i personaly believe he was either the Royal families Doctor or it actually was Prince Albert but as i've said i very much doubt we'll find out

I still think its amazing that he only killed 8 people, yet is probably THE most infamous serial killer in history! Seriously, he's like a real-life supervillain.

Ever read the letters supposedly sent by him to the police? Creepy stuff.

That's because he's the first to get away with it, as far as the public knows. Many serial killers operate for years before they are caught, but almost all modern SKs are eventually caught because forensic science has advanced significantly since the Ripper days. Also potential witnesses are more willing to cooperate with the police than they were 100 years ago. Did the London police even offer a reward for information leading to the capture of the Ripper? I doubt many of them were very upset at the murders as long as the victims were "only *****s".

well the belief has it that he was a surgeon and his mom was a prostitute and his mother died of a disease she got from having sex (modern day aids or hiv, some std) so in the rippers head get rid of all prostitutes in the london area would decrease the wide spread of the disease. I dont know thats just another observation.

you guys are right noone exactly knows why or who but it would be interesting to find out. J the Ripper was indeed a surgeon and a british citizen, and proven but i'm not quite sure, but he was a male (? please ladies dont attack me).

TIP u do make a very good point but i really do believe that whoever it was he was Asosiated with the Royal Family because they wont reveal who it was even today which is pretty suspicious if u ask me i mean if was just a normal ordinary person who wasn't asosiated with the Royal Family then we would of found out who it was but since we haven't then i do believe that Jack The Ripper was someone who was asosiated with the Royal Family

I was really looking forward to murdering prostitutes. You've crushed my dream. 😱
