It got me thinking.

Would you confess to something you did not do if it would spare your life?

Jen

i don't know

there are too many variables to this question to be able to give a difinative answer. i'd rather not be in that situation to start with.

Jen I haven't saw the Movie, but no I wouldn't admit to something that I didn't do just to save my Life. Sure it is easy for me to say now, but I really don't think that I would do it.:wow:

I have thought about this a lot and honestly, I could not do it myself. I consider myself a very honest person and could not live with a lie.

Jen

Come on folks, I want to hear fro all of you.

I agree with Steve; this question is too complicated. I'd have to weigh my options first.

If my life absolutely depended on it, yes I would. I would sooner live with a lie, then never see my daughter or family again.

I think it would depend on what they wanted me to confess to. If it were something serious, I most likely wouldn't. But, if it was some silly little thing that didn't really matter to me, I would. I think giving up my life for nothing would be a greater wrong than the lie.

What are we admitting to doing? I don't know the movie or what it is about, but if I didn't do something I'm sure as hell not gonna say I did it!:sowrong: :wow:

Boop, The Crucible is about the Salem witch trials in the 1600's. At the time it was written (late 40's/early 50's) it was also intended to say something about McCarthyism.

As for making a false confession to save your life, that's how the American justice system really works. Only about 5% of all criminal cases go to trial. The rest get plea bargained. The five thugs recently cleared of rape and attempted murder in the Central Park Jogger case fall into that category. Their lawyers told them that a guaranteed deal of 5-7 years was lots better than 20-to-life they might have gotten from a jury, and they bought it.

In this case, no real harm was done. It wasn't as if they'd never been in prison before. It kept 5 lifelong thugs off the street for 5 yrs. They may have been not guilty of this specific crime, but they were hardly innocent. Think of it as punishment for the crimes they didn't get caught doing.

Well it depends.....

on the nature of the crime.
For example: If I was being convicted of killing a serial rapist or child molester then I wouldn't have a problem lieing. However, if I had to confess to being one of the above I'd rather be executed. Yes many will say lieing is lieing, however, survival is survival. If your lie isn't placeing harm unto another but going towards a good cause (which saveing your own skin is a very good cause) then I don't see the problem with it. For the record I think lieing is bad and am by no means defending liars.

So Strel,
What is your answer to the question?

Jen

I'm not afraid to die, so if the situation happened tomorrow morning I definitely would not confess to something I did not do. On the other hand, I don't have a family or many close friends at the moment. If I had a wife and kids to think about, I would weigh my options and think about whether or not the charge in question is big enough to warrant dying for before I go and make a decision that I can't fix later. Just my 3 1/2 cents.
