if i made a clips site, would anyone use it?

hey y'all;

i was just looking through my clips and i was thinking about making a clips site: i have 50 megs of space from an ISP. the point is that you've probably seen them before, as i have got about 70% of them from sources on the TMF.

the majority are f/f, altough i do have some m/f. i was thinking of giving each a descrpiption on the page, so you could see if you wanted it before downloading (there's nothing more frustraing for me than spening half an hour downloading a clip i just hate)

i want to give something back to the community but only if they want it, because it will take up quite a lot of my time. i''ll also need a program that completely hides files on Windows ME, i believe Uncle Steve mentioned one a while back.

please tell me if you would like another free clips site. if you want i'll go and have a proper look through my clips and see what i have.

Cool idea, coolman, of course it would be greatly appreciated by practically all TMF members!

The problem with clips is not so much the webspace, but the bandwidth problem. Most webspaces allow only a tiny amount, and a medium-sized clip tends to eat up 2GB and more within just two or three days.

Just make sure that you won't get charged for exceeding the bandwidth allowance afterwards. I know of a British member who was charged over 700$ for the extra data flow! Read the fine print of the ISP conditions carefully, that's all I can advise.

Another option...

You could do what I'm getting ready to do. I'll eventually be organizing all of my clips and setting up a page with them all listed (roughly 1,700 of them at last count from all over the web). Then, those that people want can be requested and uploaded to a yahoo group. That way, it will be only those clips that are of definite interest that are placed there for people to DL. This will help to avoid unnecessary bandwidth use while still making available the clips people ask for. Just a thought.

I'm working on other, more immediate (money making) projects at the moment. So, this unfortunately isn't likely to take place until around the first of the year with my own stuff.

Web space is all and well, coolman, but video clips eat bandwidth like Mars Bars. If you set up a clips site, then HELL YES I'd use it regularly. But you won't get much of a bandwidth from the free stuff you ISP gives you.

i've had a nose around the t&cs and the help area, and i've found out that my bandwidth is 150mb per day, which i think is way way way too small. if 650mb is exceeded in a day, then the site is restricted for 24 hours. they also reserve the right to cancel a site completely.

so, i think i will do what Ann has cleveryly suggested: have a URL that documents the clips i have, and make several Yahoo groups to put them on. on the actual site i'll number the clips, and i'll call the groups things like 'coolmans clips 1-5', 'coolmans clips 6 - 10' etc. or, maybe i could make it so a specific groups has a specific theme, like 'coolman's m/f clips' and 'coolmans f/f clips'.

this would also be easier for me as i would only have a few pages, not a whole site.

what do you think?

Idea for the 150 mb limit

This is just an idea I had.



1. You post a list of the clips.

2. Members contact you with choice 1, choice 2, etc.

3. You use whatever scheme you want and create coolman's top-40 (or top-10 or top-100 or whatever)

4. You choose X-number of TMF members (where you'll calculate X to fit the rest of this plan).

5. You tell those X-number of members when to expect such-a-clip.mpg to be on your site. (See ? G.M.T. does come in handy once in awhile)

6. You put the clip up for a short while (an hour ? three hours ?)

7. When you hit your bandwidth limit, you take the clip down.

8. Those members will be expected to share the clip with others.


This system could multiply your bandwidth by a factor of at least 2x and possibly by orders of magnitude. This proposed scheme may sound a little bit Keynesian, but the alternative (i.e., announce a URL here and opening up to the world) just never works in real life. It almost always results in just about nobody getting anything.

Tickling clips will eat up bandwidth because of their size. For example my site has used 17Gb already, and we haven't even gone a week yet. If you want to open a clips site, I would recommend either finding a FTP you can use, or a host provider that offers unmetered bandwidth. They'll be typically using Cogent which isn't a good brand of bandwidth, but it's decent enough. Let me know if you need any further help with this site idea you're having.

p50, i like your idea but i think its a bit too complicated for me. i don't have all the time in the world to make a clips site (mores the pity). using yahoo groups is still pretty complicated, and that way people choose what they want to join rather than waiting for a public vote. i couldn't sustain any sort of voting system.

the other thing, tickletheater, is that i don't have any money that i can put into this, so if you know anywhere thats free and matches your description, then please, tell me and i'll have a good go at it. if not, then i think that yahoo groups are my best bet - i hope that this is not too inconvenient for anyone, but i will post instructions for how to use yahoo on the site.

btw, for anyone interested, i have 140 clips... good or bad?

Don't know if you have been to my site, but it's been up and down over the past year or two. Mainly because of free hosts messing up, and other issues. But I finally opened back up under a paid host because that is the only way to go if you want a stable site. I do have my media hosted for free, but since I've been around for awhile people know me and come to my site. Which means other hosts are interested in an exchange where they give me resources for a banner ad or mention of their services. This probably wouldn't work for a new site because well, you wouldn't have the hit numbers yet to impress the host enough to offer their services. Anyways, 140 clips is not that bad. In fact, people would probably still go to your site if you had just one. Because one is better than none, right?

Clips...

I have about 400 or so stashed on my HD...if you have a list of what you already have, I'd be happy to email you some more, assuming you have a broadband connection. The problem with clips is all the re-naming they go through...makes it tough to actually know what they are at times. I try to label mine with the body area being tickled as well, so those with special interests can find them easier. If you have Aimster/Grokster/Limewire/Kazaa or some other file transfer setup you can also easily(?) supplement with additional clips from those... Q

hey q, how about i give you the details of my ftp server? it holds 50 megs of stuff so you should be able to get something on it. i have 2 problems: 1) getting time alone to use the computer and 2) i only have 56k, unfortunately. but if you can do an upload or two it would be great, as i can retrieve them at my leisure without wasting much of your time (i guess that you have broadband). i'll find the time to make a list and i'll put it up here over the weekend, the thing is i can only give you the filenames as i d/loaded them, maybe not as they actually are. thanks for your offer.
