---------------------------

1. Foreword

The third Tk-Strip Slot Machine in the series is based on the anime called 'higurashi no naku koro ni', also known under the title 'When they cry'. The original title for the machine was set to be "Ogreheart" but this has been changed to "Higurashi" as it simply was considered better. This third machine has a very different feel than the two predecessors, not only visually but also in gameplay as contains several features that the previous two machines did not have.

2. Warnings and precautions

- Warning! The safety breaks are OFF. This machine is NOT safe and during the last tickle stage Mion is in mortal danger. Let me say it another way: If 'scenes of desperation' is your wet dream, this machine may be your dream come true.
- May contain shocking/disturbing imagery. Really! You have been warned. Play at your own risk.
- May contain Violence. Hey, it's true to the theme!
- Contains blood. Lots and lots of blood. So if you don't like blood, this machine may not be for you.
- Contains nudity (optional - needs to be unlocked also with credits).
- May be addictive.

3. New Features

This Slot Machine has been enriched with new gambling features which make the game play more exciting and diverse. The features are explained in some detail below:

3.1 Higher/Lower

This is the first machine where the 'Higher/Lower' game has been implemented. The feature was already planned to be included in the first Slot Machine, but the decision was made to leave out the extra features for the time being.

The Higher/Lower game replaces the multiplier bet gamble you used to get when winning an amount of credits. While the latter function was extremely profitable for people with good reaction speeds, it was devastating for those without. The replacement (Higher/Lower) puts everyone again on the same level as it is not relying on your reaction speed.

In Higher/Lower you will see two playing cards (from a regular playing card deck). One is faced up and the other is faced down. You have to guess whether the 'face down' card has a higher value or a lower value than the card shown. If you guess right you will get the credits won multiplied (by the same multiplier, first x2, then x3, followed by x4, x6, x8 and finally x10). If you guess wrong you lose it all. Of course you can press the collect button to grab the credits and stop gambling further at any time during this Higher/Lower session.

Just for your information: Only the cards of the Spades suit are used and each card appears only once in the queue (shuffled each time at the start of the Higher/Lower game). In other words, If you started with 3 of Spades and then get a 5 of Spades you know that the chance of getting a 'lower' card is diminished by the fact that the 3 of Spades is already out of the game. This knowledge may help you when deciding on how to gamble.

The base amount at stake in the Higher/Lower game is based on your initial bet multiplied by the win-multiplier gained from the winning picture combination on the reels (see the win-chart for these multipliers). Successive (successful) bets in the Higher/Lower game will raise this base by x2, x3, x4, x6, x8 and finally x10 (forced payout if won).

3.2 Tokens

If you are familiar with the predecessors of this machine you know what the letters (Machine 1) or numbers (Machine 2) on the reels are used for. This third machine has numbers just like machine 2. But in addition to this you will now also find coloured 'tokens' on some of the reel positions.

Each reel contains two positions with a RED token and two positions with a BLUE token. At the top of the machine (above the reels) you see a panel with a line of tokens (going from red on the left side to blue on the right side). Each time you get a RED token on the win-line an additional RED token will light up on the panel above. Each time you get a BLUE token on the win-line an additional BLUE token will light up on the panel. However, The red and blue tokens are each others' opposites and this works a little like a 'tug-of-war'. Whenever you get a red token, the balance is pulled further towards the left and if you had collected a few blue tokens this means they will actually diminish. You will only get red tokens once you have reduced the blue tokens on the panel to zero. And vise versa of course.

At the far left you see the word "Spin-a-Win" and at the far right you see the word "Spin-a-Stop". Once you fill up the red all the way onto the "Spin-a-Win" sign (on the red side) or onto the "Spin-a-Stop" sign (on the blue side) you will activate the special features under the same name. So now you know what to do with the tokens, try to get more of one colour than the other and try to reach the special features to activate them.

Finally there is one more token and that's a yellow one. It only appears on ONE position (on the middle reel) so it's quite uncommon, but you'll learn to hate it nonetheless. The yellow token resets the panel above (regardless of what other tokens might be present on the win-line at the same time). If you get it the indicators on the panel return to their default (neutral) position. It can be tricky to get these features activated, you'll have to rely on your luck.

Note: Holding a reel which has a token (or number for that matter) on the win-line will not result in collecting it again after the next spin.

3.3 Spin-a-Win

This is a very cool feature which does exactly what it says. Spin the reels and win! Just give the lever a whirl and wait for the credits to roll in.

Basically all you need to do to activate it is collect 5 red tokens (which makes the "Spin-a-Win" light and red tokens blink). See above for an explanation on these tokens.

When the Spin-a-Win feature activates you can't bet and the 'fixed bet' system is put on hold. This is a free turn, doesn't cost you any credits, and you're guaranteed to win.

Technically Spin-a-Win works as follows: All reels start spinning simultaneously. Reel 1 stops at a random position as normal. Then reel 2 continues spinning until either the same picture appears matching reel 1 OR a feather appears (whichever happens first). When Reel 2 has stopped reel 3 will be blocked as soon as either the same picture as on reel 1 emerges OR if a feather appears (in case reel 2 didn't already land on a feather) - whichever happens first. The result is a win situation of either three in a row or two symbols + 1 feather. The pay-out is equal to the multiplication factor found on the win-chart.

3.4 Spin-a-Stop

As was mentioned above, the multiplication gamble function was removed (replaced by the Higher/Lower game). If you did have a good reaction speed you might feel sad about that, but fear not. It will come in useful when you get to hit the "Spin-a-Stop".

Just like in Spin-a-Win you can't place bets and the fixed bet is on hold, but this is also a free turn which won't cost you anything.

Unlike in Spin-a-Win it doesn't guarantee your win, but with this higher risk also comes the chance on a higher reward because you can go for the highest payout rather than hoping that Spin-a-Win will turn up three question marks.

Here's the deal. You start by pulling the lever. All three reels begin spinning, but unlike normally, they spin at a much slower speed. The reels keep spinning at a steady speed until you stop them manually by pressing the matching 'hold' buttons below them. When you have stopped all the reels you get a payout if you managed to hit a winning combination. The payout is equal to the multiplication factor found on the win-chart.

Drawback: The reels are not spinning very fluently, meaning that I don't have support for showing 'in-between' positions. They'll move one image at the time (snap-to-win-line). While this makes it easier to see when a picture is ON the win-line (and not somewhere else), it might also make it slightly harder to react quickly enough. Whether this feature will appear in upcoming machines is not yet certain and also depends a lot on feedback received. I might replace it by something else in the next machine.

Note: For those who are wondering: The middle reel spins in opposite direction of the other two.

4. Changes

In short, the following changes were made compared to the previous machine:

- Fixed Bet has been adjusted to stay active after tickling was activated.
- Fixed Bet is not spamming the display anymore (so the win/lose texts can be seen).
- Current bet is now shown in the 'credits' display (on the right).
- Multiplier gamble has been replaced by the Higher/Lower game.
- The 'Gamble' button has been removed from the Machine (in line with the removal of the multiplier gamble).
- Higher and Lower buttons have been added (in line with the addition of the higher/lower game).
- Redress and Undress buttons have been moved up.
- Display has been resized (in order to show the cards and additional texts comfortably).
- Runtime error 13 fix has been included (which has also been released to other machines in an earlier patch).
- A token tug-of-war system has been added, leading to the new features Spin-a-Win and Spin-a-Stop.
- New feature: Spin-a-Win.
- New feature: Spin-a-Stop.
- New panel has been added above the reels to support the token tug-of-war indicators and other indicators.
- The number of different poses has been reduced from 9 to 6. There are now 2 variations at full-dress state and then 1 extra per dress state.
- Mion will come to your door and torture you horribly if you tickle her too much (just kidding, but it would be in character 😛 ).
- Blood added
- More blood added

5. Known issues

- You can not have this program open two times, nor can you play multiple different IloHnoH's Slot Machines simultaneously. This is intentional.
- The first time you spin after having booted up your computer, the reels may not turn smoothly. After the first spin this should be resolved, however.
- If you continue gambling (bet+spin) after finishing the Higher/Lower game too quickly some Higher/Lower related text may fill up the little display. This has no negative effect on the game and is cleared on the next display update.
- In one of the poses Mion looks a little badly scaled. The idea was to make her look scarier and have her lean forward... this may not have come out entirely correctly but I'm satisfied with it nonetheless. (this project has taken too damn much time!)
- When guessing right during the Higher/Lower game you can't immediately guess again, you have to wait for the time-out to expire (the new card moves up and a new face-down one is shown). This doesn't make it quick & smooth maybe, but it was decided to be that way. Sorry!
- There's a minor graphical glitch when pulling the lever. Some wrong colours at the base. Not affecting the gameplay. Just too much blood in this machine, couldn't prevent some area to get blood-red while it shouldn't have been. Heh. 😛
- In some poses it looks like Mion has a really terrible head-wound. This is not actually so, the blood is actually on the glass... the position just happened to be like that.
- The laughing looks a little strange in the tickling animation(s). I blame Mion. She's strange.
- Apparently it is possible to press the 'Undress' button again while you see the message "undressing, please wait" if you have sufficient credits, even if it's not blinking. If you do this, the credits are consumed without you getting an extra undress round, so you might not want to do that.

6. Rumours

There's a rumour that this machine includes a possible fatality scenario. This has as of yet not been confirmed.

Note: All my games are scanned for viruses before uploading (and none were found, otherwise I wouldn't upload). The games were created for you to have fun, not a nightmare! Please do NOT play these at work or in another environment where you might run into trouble. By downloading and installing these games you take all responsibilities for effects it might have on your system or personal environment. I take no responsibilities whatsoever to caused damage or other negative effects.

Maintenance module update

I received some feedback from someone that they did not see Mion's name turn up in the maintenance program. Looks like there's a small glitch with that as well. I made a little work around that should now show up an option for resetting the newer machines, even if the character name wasn't registered.

Please download it below if you are having trouble with resetting the machine. Also the main switch has had some little modifications to make it work more smoothly.
