Next Monday we observe Memorial Day. By all means enjoy a three day weekend if you have one. Get togeather with family and friends, fire up the grill, go to the lake or beach, and relax. But, take a moment to remember what the day really means.

Desert Storm. Afghanistan. Iraq.

Posted this day to honor and remember those who gave the most precious gift one can give to another, their life.

Remember a generation that dropped everything they did on December 7, 1941, and came together for total victory...too bad it didn't happen on September 11, 2001.

It's not about some stupid barbecues. It's not about showing off your scantily clad trophy wife at the park. It's not about getting shitfaced and driving down road to kill another driver. It's not about dealing with your ridiculously dysfunctional relatives in your living room. It's not about fighting over a stupid parking place at Walmart. Memorial Day is not just another lame excuse to take a day off.

It's about an exceptional individual that is willing to sacrifice their lives to keep others alive in harm's way. There are thousands of them buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Some are buried in Normandy. In Germany. Dying in battle, or to save others when no one else will, is still the greatest honor. The firemen who died on 9/11 are heroes. The Pizza Hut manager who helped several people to safety inside a freezer during the May 22 tornado in Joplin, and died keeping the door shut is a hero.

Memorial Day is the time to honor them. Veteran's Day is the day we honor those who lived.
