Incredible things you took too long to discover

For me it was Cowboy Bebop. I had always heard little bits and pieces about it since I was younger but never enough to really spark my interest in it until one movie night at university where my friend came in with the movie on his laptop. After about 10 minutes of it I was completely hooked and had to watch the tv series. For anyone who hasn't watched it, if you're into science fiction philosophical stuff with some cool action I would definitely suggest it, you can find all the episodes and the movie online quite easily.

But yeah, the show has had this MASSIVE following and is recognized as the best anime (or second best depending on who you talk to) to ever come out and I've only just discovered it about 15 years too late.

Anyone else have anything like that?

Arrrrgh! If I had this video when I was making cupcakes the other day it would have made life so much easier.

THAT guy is now my hero. I am gonna have to start doing this in my shop. SO much faster.

Steam Powered Giraffe. They are my very favorite band. And they've been around a few years already by the time I ever heard of them, thanks to an amazing friend of mine who also happens to be a member of this site.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
For most of my life this was an impenetrable WTF that nobody could explain. Even when i tried to watch it back on VH1 in 1993, I only got to the Time Warp and turned it off disappointed. But another decade and a half as well as considerable research into the fields that it explores and I finally understood what a masterpiece of pop culture it was.

The Jerk
The Jerk, arguably Steve Martin's greatest contribution to humankind, always looked like one of those black comedies from the 70s about a dickbag who falls on hard times so I never bothered to watch it. The cover art with Martin in a bathrobe holding a bunch of crap didn't help. Had anybody bothered to tell me that it was basically Spaceballs for movies about idiots, I would've tuned in with everybody else on planet Earth who knew about this long before I did.

Watchmen
I literally got this because a guy in a comic book shop overheard me say I hadn't read it when the title was casually brought up and he told me to buy it and read it. The whole "comic books are STORIES too" didn't hit me before then as I was focused more on the artwork. After reading it through 3 times, the details finally clicked and I realized that I was reading something so far beyond me that I didn't know what I was looking at. I now own 3 copies of the book and always have a reading copy with me for when I travel or feel like glancing through it.

Doctor Who
My cousin was the one in my family who knew about Doctor Who back when it was re-run on the educational TV channels on Saturday after all the cartoons were over. He tried to explain it to me once and I thought to myself "WTF is he talking about?" Thankfully, I am now a devoted convert, but if the 2005 series hadn't restarted the whole thing I would continue to be one of the ignorant and deprived.

Firefly
Amazing show. Only discovered it last year.

Mass Effect
Best game trilogy I've played through. I didn't discover it until like half a year before ME3 was released. Though I suppose that was useful in a way, since I got to play through essentially the entire saga from start to finnish, with little in the form of a waiting gap in between games.

...I guess I'm slow at picking up on Science Fiction?

Basketball! I've been watching the NBA finals for the first time ever and I'm properly hooked! Spurs rock 🙂
