There have been very few albums out lately that I have absolutely fallen in love with and this is one of them. If you like real metal with a progressive flair, do NOT miss out on this album!
Dragonforce is more or less the product of putting Dream Theater, Helloween, Yngwie Malmsteen and Savatage in a blender. Unlike the Pantera-like practice of having great music and vocals that amount to growls on steroids, the vocals here are highly melodic while retaining thier power. Speed is of the essence on this album, but somehow Dragonforce manages to keep a real sense of melody and awe-inspiring harmonic splendor on top of all the speed. It's not just speed for speed's sake like so many other bands.
They also have a keyboard player and actually use him! This guy's chops are up there with the guitarists', so much so that , like Jens Johannsen in Yngwie's band, you sometimes think there's a guitar solo going on when it's actually the keys.
The names of some of the songs sound like something out of a garage band (Operation Ground and Pound, Revolution Death Squad, etc.) but don't let that fool you. The opening track, Through fire and Flames, is my new favorite metal song. And, even though they rely on speed (the drummer must be dead after every show, I have NEVER heard a faster double-kick and that includes Metallica), make no mistake that this a true progressive-metal band.
So, if you like that sort of thing and are sick and tired of three-chord emo shit being called "New Rock", get yourself a copy of "Inhuman Rampage" by Dragonforce.
You will thank me, I promise!
