Still, what the hell is Jabber? If it's something ancient, you know nobody uses it. 😛

SheDevil, this is from the official Jabber website, www.jabber.org

Jabber is best known as "the Linux of instant messaging" -- an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo ...

I hadn't heard of it until now, but the idea of a spyware-free, non-commercial IM is appealing and might be worth a look 🙂

Tried IM2... still too temperamental for my tastes. Looks promising nevertheless.

I used AIM, Yahoo, and I use ICQ on occasion. I use each for different things.

I primarily use the yahoo as a second resort if contacting me through AIM proves to be a problem for people. It also serves the purpose of being the account I use for people to request fanart, pictures, etc (at least thats what most people who contact me on that account ask for). Basically its my "business" account.

I use AIM the most however, and I use that for chatting with friends (those I know online and off).

ICQ, I haven't used it in a long time. But that was more ideal for large file sharing, etc.

So I did, HDS. I consider it a victory. 😀
I use Yahoo occasionally...in spurts. It used to not work on my computer but after rehauling the whole system it seems to.
AIM I use pretty much every day. Not always for chatting but I leave it on in the background. Yahoo is pretty useless for picture sharing since it doesnt allow you to embed pictures in the IM which I do a lot. Yahoo though has a far superior voice and webcam. Not saying much though since AIM's webcam barely functions at all.

Newer additions of AIM have been reported as problematic for some users. The newest addition is said to slow internet speeds (though I don't see how it would affect the modem), and the most frequent disturbance is program failure and loading issues while AIM is on. Anyone experience these problems? I haven't.

I might just do that. Because recently, as recent as last week, my connection has been getting slower and fluctuates at night. Its just fine now, but the other times it was not and it gets really irritating when you're carrying a conversation, get cut off, the messenger doesn't tell the person you were talking to that you have been logged off, they keep keep talking, you finally get back, and then they have to repeat themselves or copy and paste.

I really do wonder if AIM is not the cause in an indirect way. I know its not the primary reason, I chalk that up to busy servers during the holidays and the fact I have a wireless connection using a wireless card as opposed to a networked, based, in home wireless connection.

But I think its well worth what I have. It is wireless, and I use the card with my laptop, so I can be anywhere at any time and be on the net with generous speeds. Only problem is I get disconnected often, even if the signal is strong. Sometimes I think I may have a defective card, but I don't think so, as the problem isn't really that bad at all, and I get reconnected to the net within a matter of seconds.

Can you tell me right off the bat how Express is different from what I have now? I wouldn't want to sign up for something if theres only a small margin of difference.

Before I refornatted my computer went one step beyong just not liking me. I think it was secretly plotting against me.

I used to think my computer had a vendetta against me too, but I treat it right and compliment it for being a good machine. So I know its the shenanigans of outside interference thats the cause and the real enemy to my connection.

My...precious...LOL

My computer (or should i say both our computer me and my parents computer) it used to have alot of problems of slowness and pop up ads and error messages all over the place when we would get online and surf around! But now that me and my dad un-installed windows xp and then re-installed a brand new copy of windows xp home edition just a few weeks ago. It has been running like brand new once again and it's faster then ever now.

And thats a good thing (Martha Stewart 😛 yuck)

I use AIM. LOL, Jabber, sounds interesting but I never heard of it.

AIM Express is a browser-based messenger that requires no installation and can run on any Java-enabled browser (though it doens't work well with Firefox). You can use it to contact AOL buddies and perform limited conference chats, but it doesn't allow message archiving or file transfers. Many people use AIM Express when connecting from work or public Internet terminals which don't have AIM installed.

Rotting Lies, it sounds like you had a major spyware problem. You might want to visit this site for information on preventing future spyware and adware trouble: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/soft6.htm

Best of luck,

Yeah we did have major spyware problems. But since we re-installed windows xp we now have installed Spy Sweeper and AVG Antivirus program (it's the free version though for now) and we also got Popup Stopper installed also.

What's the difference between Instant Messengers?

AIM is that ugly chick who gives great head and works really, really, well.

MSN is your typical blonde: really stunning features, but you can't communicate with her.

Yahoo is that creepy guy wacking off in the corner that no one likes.

Trillian is your average bisexual male.

Thanks for the screenshots. Jabber looks like a nice, professionally designed program. If it's anything like Firefox, it would definitely be worth a try, especially in view of the bugginess and generally poor design of the free "branded" IMs like Yahoo, etc.

Your very welcome Val. Let us know if you are planning on downloading Jabber so you can tell us all how it is and if you liked it or not. But i would suggest going to Jabber's offical website to download it or to use it
