IPhones Replacing Laptops?

I was talking to a friend on Monday night. He lives in NYC, and told me, that, in his experience, from what he's heard of, and seen.. IPhones are beginning to replace laptops as a means of people accessing the internet, because IPhones are internet, phone, and can play music as well. This friend also told me that such development is the reason why laptops seem to have dropped in price, even over the past several months. While I've seen that laptops have dropped in price, I theorized that they did so due to the economy, and more competition for sales, from a wider range of manufacturers.

Are laptops still "in".., or does what my friend said hold true? Has the technological age really come down to where a little phone will be the main means of accessing the phone, the internet, and playing music?

Thoughts? Thanks.

I would NOT exchange one for the other. I like having internet on my phone for while I'm out and about, but such a small keyboard and screen gets annoying for long-term projects or searches.

I'll keep both my laptop AND my iphone, please 🙂

More like tablets. As versatile as smartphones are, they are still limited in their capacity. Tablets seem to achieve that happy medium between the portability of smartphones and the functionality of laptops. I don't think laptops are completely on their way out the door yet, though. Hardcore gamers need them, as well as people needing to prepare work documents, and whatnot (I don't care what ANYONE says, it is NOT convenient writing a document without a keyboard!).

Well I have both and I will say I prefer to surf the net on my laptop as opposed to my droid phone or I-pad. Give me a large key bord over a touch screen key pad.

You really need a large screen to view things on the internet.

I've got an iphone, and there is nothing it can do that would ever make me consider, even for a second, not having my laptop.

Thanks everyone.

From the feedback here, it seems like people disagree with my friend. To be honest, so do I. I can see having an Iphone when out and about for quick messaging, but, if I'm home, or in a stationary place, a regular laptop seems to work much better.

I have no need for an iPhone, and there's no substitute for a laptop. Call me old fashioned.

Phoenix, I see your point. I dont feel like I want to get an IPhone either. I have no plans to in the near future. As for what happens further down the road, I'll see.

Phones are too slow unless you use good Wifi. And in that case, the screens is too small. Sure, you can get a tablet like the Ipad and such, but at the end of the day a PC or a laptop, with a keyboard, mouse and a decent sized monitor will always be my first choice.

The only time I use my smart phone's net is at work for GPS and YouTube when I'm shopping for a game and need a quick review. The map feature comes in handy to guide me to a store or locate the closest branch of it to me.

Usually though, I'll do my research at home for all of that. It's just faster and easier to see.

I've had this IPhone going for almost two years; starting next month... If I remember correctly; I am making this post via iPhone.

When there's a phone that has 8 gigs of RAM, 700 gigs of harddrive space, a 3.0 ghz processor, and a sapphire HD radeon 9850 graphics card, then maybe I'll make the transition.

Until then, I'll stick with my desktop.

Gamers and students will always go with the laptop. But! alot of people that don't hangout on forums like these, work full time and lead active and social lives...there really is no need for a laptop anymore. As in the market is saturated and the need for people to buy their second/third/fourth laptop is gone. My laptop is BEAT! Three years old...I don't even move it anymore. Is that a drawback? Nope. I can check out the TMF, bank account balance, CNN/Fox news/AP/ESPN, Facebook and a slew of other things I would normally do on my laptop. I'd say since I got my iPhone I use my laptop 75% less than I did before I got it. Without my iPhone my demand for a new laptop would be high...and i'd be willing to spend $1200+ for a new one. With my iPhone they'd be lucky to get $500 out of me. This is why the prices for laptops are slumping and likely never to recover.

I'm no hardcore tech geek but I think the drop in laptop prices might have something to do with almost everyone having one already (demand goes down), and it being the holidays, as well as the differing economic situations in the countries the components are made in and the financial status of the vendors that sell the laptops. I'm on a laptop right now and my smart phone is plugged into it. I can't imagine having one without the other and at some point, I'll probably own a tablet as well as each device has its role and sometimes all work together.
