Is is better to give or get.. a compliment??

I was at an event and George Lucas was speaking. He was talking about the work he's doing to improve education, and one thing he said struck me..

He was comparing/contrasting pleasure and joy. He said pleasure is what most people are after. Money, sex, cars, sex, drugs etc. It's internal to you, something you give to yourself. But joy is something you feel when you give to others. He said that's why celebs (the smart ones, anyway) try to achieve joy through great acts of selfless giving. Because pleasure by itself isn't enough to make you happy.

Think of all the celebs now that have all the money they need to have pleasure their entire lives. And their lives are a mess.

So, back to my question. Do you feel better after giving or getting a compliment?

i feel it's better to give. i like making someone else's day. i, however, am not good at taking them, but i say "thanks!" anyway so as not to seem like an ass.

I feel better giving a compliment. I often get embarrassed receiving one.

I give compliments all the time,its nice to get them back every now and then 🙂

Guilty as charged as well. The people I most respect (including me!) have learned to do both, equally well and engage in both behaviors a LOT.

I love giving to others, helping in whatever way I can. I think that both are great things but giving of yourself is much harder but worth it!
Learning to do both equally would be a valuable thing to do.

I won't deny that I enjoy the occasional compliment, but I can honestly say it gives me greater joy to give comments. Cloud put it best, I love making people's days and building up their self-esteem.
