Yes, of course it is illegal. Companies don't like the fact that their product can be downloaded for free @ warez. But, they still DO exist, and haven't been wiped out, although some ppl would like that to happen. Why? Don't ask me. Is there a member of this forum that knows more about this? Plz respond because we need it.
Warez sites aren't wiped out because the people who run those sites are dilligent in re-uploading the illegal files whenever they get deleted. It is time consuming and requires technical knowledge to run a warez site. Nethertheless, the warez distribution model does work, and should be considered for the distribution of tickling clips.
I'll attempt to explain how it all works.
Warez is usually distributed via public FTP sites, free web hosting or IRC. Since FTP is most popular, I'll explain that first. I may write a follow up article on free web methods latter if there is interest.
FTP
There are millions of public FTP servers connected to the Internet. By public, I mean ones which allow anonymous login. That is, you login using the user name: anonymous and your e-mail as the password. Famous public FTP sites include ftp.cdrom.com and ftp.sunset.de.
Those sites are unsuitable for the distribution of illegal material since the contents of those FTPs are vigilantly monitored by the sites administrators because they are famous sites for downloading the latest shareware, patches, game demos etc. Login and see for yourself.
What warez people are looking for are public FTP sites that are less dilligently administered. For example, the little known out of the way FTP in Germany or Russia where the system admin only checks the server when it breaks down. The other requirement is that the site allows read and write permissions for anonymous users (so we can actually upload stuff to it).
Once found, they will upload the warez to it and advertise the sites address in popular pirate hangouts, inc IRC channels, vbulletin message boards etc.
How do we find these magic FTP sites? We use software called "scanners". These programs take a range of IP addresses and scan them for FTP sites. For example, I give a scanner the address range 200.1.1.1 - 200.1.255.255. That will scan all the IP addresses starting from 200.1.1.1 all the way till 200.1.255.255, and report on any FTP sites it finds. Once found, I have to manually check each site it finds and see if it is suitable for uploading. As you can imagine, thats 255 * 255 sites to scan. Imagine if the range was 200.1.1.1 - 200.255.255.255. Thats 255 * 255 * 255 sites to scan. It takes a long time. You'd usually leave have to leave scanners running over night.
In the world of warez, pubs (as public FTP sites good for uploading are known) are a valuable commodity and there are dedicated "pub scanners", people who do nothing but scan for pubs and post them in warez hangouts for others to upload to.
Please bear in mind though that this is all of dubious legallity. Effectively, warez people are hijacking FTP servers for their own ends and not paying the bandwidth bill. That gets paid by the poor owners of the FTP who have no idea their site is being abused in this way until the server logs start showing massive bandwidth ussage.
So for this model to work here, we need several members to become dedicated pub scanners. They could then post the IPs of the pubs they find and then the people who have clips can upload them to those sites.
