The California recall election is off and running, with Arnold
Schwarzenegger the clear favorite. One poll shows him recieving 25%
of the vote. Another says a whopping 42% are inclined to vote for
him. If he gets anywhere near those kind of numbers (considering
Davis is recalled) Arnold Schwarzenegger will undoubtably be the next
governor of California. With the election seemingly in the
proverbial bag, conservatives across the country are beginning to
ask the question: Is Schwarzenegger Really A Republican?
He began his campaign talking about after school programs (not
exactly a Republican issue) He's pro choice, favors gay rights and of
course there's that marriage to a Kennedy. He claims to be a fiscal
conservative, yet talks of the need for California to attract more
business revenue so the government has more money available for new
programs! Doesn't sound like a conservative or even a Republican to
me.
Besides exacting vengeance on the unpopular Davis, the whole point of
this recall election is to put a Republican in the Golden State's
governorship in advance of the 2004 presidential race. The idea is
not necessarily to put California in the Bush column, but rather to
force any Democratic candidate to spend precious time, effort and
money defending a state he should win. Even if the Democrats prevail
in the end, the loss of these valuable resources could affect the
outcome in other states.
Will it work? It could but does electing a quasi liberal Republican
really change the political landscape in the nation's largest state?
Somehow I doubt it. As an adult industry professional, I have no
fear of a Schwarzenegger governorship. I don't think other so
called "liberal groups" will either. Attitudes in California are
pretty entrenched. Electing Schwarzenegger is unlikely to change
that. More likely than not, California remains firmly in the liberal
column on all the important social issues. There may soon be a movie
star Republican governor in California but the R after his name will
be strictly symbolic.
