I know ranted about this before but I guess as a RE fan. It was very disappointing to me when I purchased Resident Evil 6 and spent the whole game doing nothing but shooting like a war game. Well Capcom has admitted that was their target audience. Being that war simulator games are popular they jumped on the band wagon. grrr. If I wanted a war simullator I purchase one.

The RE6 game. Chapter 1-shoot zombies Chapter 2-shoot zombies Chapter 3-Shoot big zombie then shoot little zombies. Well I continue to play it cause I'm a fan despite my dislike of where the game markets at. I just hope if they come out with RE7 they listen to fans of the franchise that made it popular and stop marketing to gamers that don't give a crap.

I think Gears is less a war simulator and more an adventure set in a dystopian setting with a hint of 'epic' adventure when they start hitting the end of the second game and into the third. But yeah, Capcom wants more money from people for games, so it makes sense they'd alter it to suit a slightly larger demographic with a taste for killing virtual zombies. It's all well and good saying they should listen to the fans, but how many franchises do that? People will buy, so they will make.

Of course there's always a chance a franchise will get a manager/executive who says 'enough is enough, let's go back to the winning formula', which is what I think Relic, for example, did with Dawn of War II: Retribution. (Well, slightly. They kept the RPG elements of II)

There's no innovation in video games, anymore. I've been playing games that I grew up with, thanks to GOG.com and various emulators.

If you're looking for more of a "horror experience", then you should play Dead Space and Dead Space 2. They're both pretty awesome.

The last RE games I played were the Umbrella Chronicles and the Darkside Chronicles for the Wii. I enjoyed them, but more out of reliving the past games then anything else. To me, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are just such fun! I still replay them from time to time, all these years later.

I've never even touched RE 5 or 6 (or Operation: Raccoon City), as they looked as if they were getting too far out of my zone of interest. Truth be told, outside of Resident Evil or Rock Band, I'm not a gamer, so I don't expect Capcom to cater to me.

Oh well, it was a great ride while it lasted!

Perhaps you aren't playing the right games? If we're looking at what sells the best, I'd agree, but what moves the most units is rarely the best example of a medium. Lady Gaga, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj all made it into the top ten best selling albums of 2011, Fifty Shades of Grey and it's sequels are 4, 5, and 6 on the list of top selling novels right now. Innovation is still around, you just might have to trudge through some "best-selling" crap to find it first.

If you're looking for more of a "horror experience", then you should play Dead Space and Dead Space 2. They're both pretty awesome.
This. Forever. The Dead Space series is easily as scary, if not more so, than the first Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Outstanding games.

The progression of the Resident Evil series is much maligned, but it makes a bit of sense to me, honestly. The proliferation of bio-organic weapons would inevitably lead to conflicts on the scale we see in RE4, 5 and 6. There can only be so many isolated mansion facilities and underground research labs, the aftermath of the Raccoon City outbreak was inevitably going to snowball into something larger after the less scrupulous started to see how effective the BOWs were.

From a gameplay standpoint, I would love for Resident Evil to be scary again, but not if it came at the cost of going back to clunky, robotic controls. I love Resident Evil, but the first three games were amazing because of story and atmosphere, their controls were universally terrible.

I agree that degressing the gameplay to unfreed movement of the old games would be a bad idea and RE6 does give you the option of not using a gun but allows certain martial art moves to be executed---but it has a limited endurance bar that only allows you to perform a limit amount of times you can use it until it replenishes...leaving you grabbing your gun again.

I guess when I say shooting I really mean the story line is missing not so much as the gameplay. Gameplay is great. If you are looking for a game where you do nothing but outrun things and shoot then its a good game. Its more of a war game now.
