So, one day I try to open iTunes and this little box pops up that says "iTunes has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I tried restarting my computer, uninstalling iTunes and then reinstalling it, and even using an older version of iTunes, but every time I try to open the program, I get that same error message.

It's been a week of this hell and I have The Rolling Stones - "40 Licks" waiting to be put on my iPot, so any help would be awesome.

I don't know if you meant to type that 't' or not, but it makes it incredibly amusing. 😛

I take it that you have Windows Vista or 7, correct? I'm going to guess that something in the profile data iTunes makes for you is corrupt. Uninstalling it tends to leave traces behind, and if the traces are screwed up, that would cause it.

What Windows version do you have? This includes if it is 64 bit or 32 bit. Heading to the Control Panel and opening "System" (Classic View) or "System and Maintenance" --> "System" will tell you this. If we know which version you have, we can figure out where iTunes places its profile items and can delete them. We won't kill any of your music, but you may need to reimport it once you reinstall. If you have crazy customizations and such, you'd lose that as well (although uninstalling would do much of that anyway).

lol iPot.

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Operating System is what I have.

Man, I'm so happy you have a bit of an idea on how to fix this, because I had no clue.

Okay, we first need to back up the files related to your iTunes library. Don't do anything else before you have these files secured.

Some data related to your iTunes profile is located in the following folder:C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

If you have trouble accessing the AppData folder (it doesn't show up, for example), you'll need to fix a few things. In the C:\Users\USERNAME folder, look to the menu items at the top of the window. These are things like "File", "Edit", and "Tools". Under "Tools" select "Folder Options". Click the "View" tab in this window. You'll see a number of checkboxes. Make certain that "Hidden files and folders" has "Show hidden files and folders" selected. Make certain that "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" is unchecked. Click okay, and you should see the AppData folder.

Copy the Backup folder to a safe location. On your desktop is fine.

Now, we need to backup your library. Depending on how large your library is, you may not be able to copy it; you might have to move it wholesale. Find the following folder: C:\Users\USERNAME\Music\iTunes. If you have a "Music" entry in the upper right of your start menu, that should take you to where it is.

If you can copy your library, do so, copying it to a safe place. If you cannot, or you want to be lazy, rename the "iTunes" folder.

Now, you're all backed up. It's time to uninstall stuff. I'm going to refer you to a page on Apple's site: Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7. Follow the instructions on that page, particularly with respect to the order you uninstall things. To see instructions for a particular product, like "Removing iTunes", click on the "Removing iTunes" item and it will expand.

Let me know if that does work. If not, we try something very similar, but more intrusive.

When I go to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer there is no "mobile sync" folder, only the following: Cookies, iTunes, Preferences, and WebKit.

Perhaps that's iPhone-specific, then. To be safe, back up iTunes and Preferences. The other two have to do with web browser functions and not the iPod. If you happen to have Apple's Safari web browser installed, which you may, uninstall that after you remove Quicktime.

Should I try re-installing iTunes as normal after I've removed everything?

Edit: Removed everything according to the directions on that webpage. Then I reinstalled the lastest version. Once it was done, when I opened it, I got the same error message. 🙁

That's no fun; now we have to try the obnoxious route. The methods are the same as on that page with one exception: when you have removed every last thing, delete the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer and C:\Users\USERNAME\Music\iTunes. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS OF EACH! If you just renamed your iTunes folder, don't delete it, but be certain it isn't named iTunes.

Once you've got those two folders deleted, try reinstalling iTunes. With luck, you killed the corrupt file or files and it will actually work.

So what does it mean if iTunes opens when I'm logged on Windows as a guest, but not when I'm logged on as me?

Corrupted profile information, most likely. iTunes stores information on users in the folders belonging to that user. That's that "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer" thing from before. On your account, there is something corrupt in there. On the guest account, there isn't. I was hoping you wouldn't have to delete anything and that it would resolve itself, but the guest account having access lends further weight to the theory that there is something wrong either in that AppData folder or in the Music library folder.

You may want to try just deleting the folder in AppData. Leave your music (Backing it up anyway), uninstall everything as before, and delete that folder in AppData. Then reinstall and see if it works. What a bother this is; no easy solution.
