TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian judge who once ejected a female lawyer for showing too much cleavage hit the headlines again on Wednesday after she ordered an accused shoplifter out of the courtroom for wearing a belly-button revealing top.
Ontario Justice Micheline Rawlins told the teenager to go and change and scolded the youth's lawyer for his client's appearance, the Chatham Daily News said.

"Frankly, your honor, I didn't notice," lawyer David Jacklin replied, before leaving to "check to make sure my other clients are appropriately dressed."

Newspapers quoted Rawlins as saying that since the teenager did not have to stare at the judge's midriff, the court should not have to eye hers either.

The teen returned to the courtroom clad in a buttoned-down shirt and was thanked by the judge. Rawlins noted that, while the tank top was inappropriate for the courtroom, it had looked nice on the girl.

In March, Rawlins refused to hear arguments from lawyer Laura Joy because she wore a tight V-necked shirt under a pantsuit. The judge deemed the outfit too revealing for a courtroom and told her to return dressed more conservatively.

"I don't want to see bra straps. I don't want to see cleavage. I don't want to see belly buttons. I don't want to see stocking tops...in a court of law," Rawlins, a judge in Chatham, Ontario, 290 km (180 miles) southwest of Toronto, said at the time.

She added that Joy's outfit "in a static position was fine, but unfortunately people move, people bend over. They don't have to look at my cleavage. I don't have to look at theirs."

what is this world coming to when a woman can't bare her midriff! lol

Oh the humanity! I'd take this to the Supreme Court of Canada (if there is one,eh?)

"For the heinous of crime of baring your midrif in my court room. I find you in contempt of court. I hearby sentence you to be tickled on your bare midrif for thirty minutes. The sentence is to be carried out immediately. Bailiff escort the guilty to my chamber. I decree a 45 minute recess." *bangs gavel*

If only the world was ruled by people like us.

ROFL! Good one Novus.

Frankly this doesn't surprise me at all. I had to testify on behalf of a child who was being abused by his father a few years back. I was informed by the childs mother just before leaving for the court that I'd have to change from my very nice and conservative pantsuit into a skirt. Why? The judge felt that women shouldn't wear pants. Go figure!

Actually, I was thinking that the uptight judge should be tickled, not the defendent. Just to loosen her up a bit.

Screw the system of law, tickle the crap out of both of'em. The teen for showing her midriff, and the judge for being an uptight... um bi@tch

I actually see nothing wrong with the judges decision....

Maybe she doesn't care to see what she no longer has? Who knows....

However, sometimes how you present yourself does have some effect on the perception of others (regarding you... LOL WORDY Sentence). And not to sound like I am stepping out of a scene from Ally McBeal, but sometimes juries and judges tend to take a well dressed articulate client more seriously than a "inappropiately" dressed client.

It's how life goes.... And besides... Middrifts and tanktops aren't allowed in schools.. so why should they be allowed in court. COVER THAT BELLY UP! LOL

Personally.... I don't care, but if I was the judge... I would do that too. Just cause I can. Heehee... Make me feel all tough and powerful. Make everyone wear gray or black suits. Funtimes.....

Court - bah! Whatever happened to the days of yore, when young scoundrels like that would simply be given the pillory in the town square and tickled to hysteria by passers-by? This so-called "due process" is running our justice system into the ground!

I also agree with the judge's decision but only because it is the norm in today's society. On an absolute level I could not disagree more with this judge. Most of the worlds problems stem from people who judge others solely by their appearance. It is a form of prejudice that is still accepted in our society. It is a miscarriage of justice when someone is judged more harshly simply because of their appearance.

Not all schools have such strict dress codes. Both my high school and college had no real dress codes. Just because it is the norm to dress conservatively in court NOW does not mean that it can never change or should never change. As the older generations dies off we can make that change now that we see the light.

I would have handled it differently. In life I will do everything I can to undermine this system of prejudice. I see it as my moral duty.

We just had to go and get serious about this subject:sowrong: , oh well, I guess I can put a serious two cents in.... The verdict is, the judge had the right of it, if you are going to present yourself in a serious situation like a trial, then at least show that you take the matter seriously and wear something formal, that doesn't show off your body, For christ's sake, your there to present a case, not you "assets." But anyway, I could take a crap and care more about that then what is going on in Canada🙄

OK.. ALL THE WORDS "YOU" are in a general sense of the word... Like Plural... second person. It could mean anybody.... All right. You can read now. LOL

I'm only answering because it is like 5 o'clock on a Saturday morning and I am bored and can't sleep. LOL.....

Yeah... me at the old age of 25.... I can't wait until my conservative generation dies out. Heehee! LOL Mind you, it may take awhile.

Like stated in my post, it REALLY isn't all that serious to me. I do believe that a courtroom should be a court room... not a CIRCUS FOR FREAKS! (that was a joke of course since... I am a freak... But hey. Heehee (shhhhh... don't tell anybody!)

And I supposed if you came into the court room with your pants sagging so all could see your 3 day old boxer shorts..... It would be a travesty of justice to make you pull up your pants and don a belt. I am ruining your freedom of expression.... Correction... NO ONE WANTS TO SEE YOUR ASS!

But you fight the good fight... and soon.... You can be butt naked in courtroom for all I care. LOL Just don't run into me, if I am the judge, cause I will make you put on some clothes.

I teach middle school by the way... Not high school or college... and to these puberty crazed kiddies.... Nothing disrupts a class more than the sight of extra skin... Do I get offended... Naw... Do I make them cover up? You'd better believe it.

Yes it is TRULY horrible that people are judged by the way that they dress.... And usually at certain workplaces and offices and schools, dresscodes and uniforms are put in place at an attempt to end the sterotyping. Some say that ruins the creativity of kids and adults... I say not so! The creativity is STILL there. However..... you take what you got... and you try to let your creativity flow around it. Some rules are a good thing. Rules in Middle School are ALWAYS a good thing.

I was told it may not be a good idea... being the first African American woman on staff at the school in which I am working... to wear dreadlocks. It may not look so professional. Close your eyes and imagine my hair. Guess what it is still in? Yep! LOL They didn't put it in the dress code that I couldn't... and they wouldn't dare. I dress professionally... and I use my hair to express my creativity. In fact.. wow! Everything about me is different. I have this young vibrant outlook in a school full of teachers who are like.... "veterans"...... (well seasoned and teaching for years- a good thing).

If a parent came in for a conference and I was dressed the same way as the students... the parent automatically loses some respect for me, and doesn't take me as seriously... Neither do the students.... That's scientific fact in a workplace..... Clothes will not make you, but can break you. I love to look my best. I love looking SHARP each day I enter that school building. I like when the kids are buzzing around me to see what I am wearing.... Because I look good... and they all know it.... Make no mistake... Everyone knows I am a teacher and a professional... (except when I am tied down to a table and waiting to get tickled. LOL Who would believe that then.)

On days that I am not at school I show skin. I think its sexy. And I STILL look good! Course, you can't see each rib... *giggle* Hades... I'd be just about as close to naked as I could. That's how free I am about clothing.

Let me enter my job, or my church (though I have shown some cleavage at church... LORD forgive me! LOL) ... Oh and during basketball season on my game days though, I am dressed up looking sharp again, like a coach should. Look on the sideline durning the NBA, College, and WNBA season... Just about every coach looks highly professional. Even the players who are hurt, some of them wear suits and very nice outfits. It looks good! I have NEVER had a coach who didn't dress up to the games.

Oh and I should confess... My father used to work for the government. He wore suits everyday. He even wore them to Six Flags. He felt naked without a suit on. LOL Really. Maybe it is because of him that I feel a professional workplace should be a place where the people are dressed professionally.... (Or as much so as the atmosphere allows). Looking good is not a bad thing... Being required to look good doesn't hurt either.

There is a time and a place for everything. There are truly other "real" freedoms to fight for than trippin over the fact that you have to change your clothes in a court of law. Give me a break.... The skimpy shirts weren't outlawed... She wanted appropiate dress in her courtroom... and Hey... Its her courtroom. I say... GET OVER IT!

I don't feel like proofreading my work... If ya see any comma splices, run on sentences, mispelled words and the like.... GET OVER THAT TOO! LOL

Good naturedly of course... 🙂 I enjoy these talks....

Novus, you're absolutely right. After the ticklers take over the world, bare midriffs will be the uniform of choice. HIDING a beautiful belly button will be a more severe crime than mere shoplifting, although both will be be punishible by tickling!

That type of appearance is certainly not harmful. I grew up watching Yogi and Boo-Boo...and both of them had bear midriffs...and I turned out just fine. (Well, sort of...) 😛

NYCITY?
So do you think ALL belly buttons are beautiful? Or just what you deem beautiful or what? Will ugly belly buttons have to remain covered. Will there be a belly button committee? LOL Hmm.......

I respectfully disagree with you Sunriseticklee. I will not go into this further on this forum, there are many other serious forums on the net for that.

Yes, Sunrise, in Tickleworld (until we come up with a better name for our society) I do envision a belly button committee to decide these things. And yes, since I would gladly serve on the committee, in order to make up close and personal decisions. It would be run kind of like a courtroom, and of course in Tickleworld (hey it's my fantasy) Exhibit One would be SunriseTicklee's bellybutton, forever setting the standard for belly-buttons in all the land. It will be evaluated for asthetic purposes, sensitivity, and of course, ticklishness. Evaluated with all the tools of the trade, fingers, feathers, tongues, Q-Tips, etc. Even if if takes all day. Even if we have to sequester the commitee.

Hey, when it comes to beautiful bellybuttons, you can't scrutinize too carefully!

Seems like this thread is going in 2 directions at the same time. Some want to talk about the serious courtroom and legal issues here on Planet Earth. Some want to talk about ticklish midriffs in the more enlightened society that is Tickleworld. Put me in the latter camp.

It certainly is ALL GOOD to me LOL!

On a serious tip... I was talking to my sisters about dresscode and the like, and I said that I was a flexable dresser, they promply told me NO I wasn't.

I was like... OK YES I AM... and they said that I ALWAYS dress up around them. Always! *GASP* I've turned into my father!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I do always make sure I am dressed to the 9's... Even when I am wearing my more revealing outfits, they are still a bit classy and nice looking. I never realized that I was one of those people who have to ALWAYS look good. LOL I thought I was a bum. Heehee.

It was such a shock to me when they told me this yesterday. Even my sister's fiance chimed in. But you know what? It kind of makes me feel good. When I was in middle school and high school... I had NO sense of style whatsoever. Heehee

Not always...like a kid being suspended just because he/she forgot to wear a belt ? ( i believe that's happened in this state in at least one school..i dunno..i've read lots of stuff about stupid rules in the paper. lol )

I'm glad I'm not in middle school anymore..otherwise I wouldn't be able to defend myself against the kid who used to pick on me, without risking expulsion..or however that's spelled. lol

And unfortunately..uniforms don't end stereotyping. There's still fighting goin on, still stereotyping goin on...even with uniforms in school, unfortunately.
