Amazing. I just received notice to show up for jury selection in early October. This is the third time in a decade I've been summoned. I tell you, this clean livin' (cough) ain't all it's cracked up to be.

On the other hand, i'll take just about any excuse i can get to be out of work.

Hope I at least get a juicy trial if I get picked. I'll be abit tougher this time around. We should not have let the bum in the last trial I was a juror on go free. It would have wound up as a mistrial anyway, but still...

This is so unfair..i want to get called and i never do...David has been called twice since we moved here...and just recently he had to fill out a form for Federal Jury...or whatever that's called..but so far, he hasn't heard anything more from them...i live clean....sighs..lol

Philadelphia Courts finally got me as a sitting juror about three years ago. It was a civil case. I ended up as Foreman. It was a good case. I relied on the evidence, not emotions. Sure, it got a little hairy in the Jury Room, but we were able to come to agreement that nobody won.

The Plaintiff didn't have enough to convince us and the Defendant was initially to blame for negligence.

Turned out our decision was exactly what the judge came up with as we start to talk.

The event convinced me to go back to school and get my Paralegal certificate.

You'll never get anywhere in law or politics that way, you know! 😀

I would hate like hell to be on a jury in a trial involving a bad law. Like say, one where an otherwise innocent kid was on trial for simple possession of the dried leaves of a certain tropical plant.

the lengendary hollywood brother has been summoned many times to the court rooms on filbert street but has never gone to the point that he is picked for the actuall jury. the hollywood brother understands that jury service is very important but it seems to the hollywood brother that some people get picked more than others

Next time you or I get called, they cut out the bagel/muffin/coffee table because of 'costs'.

I deal in another area of politics that most people wouldn't understand. I deal with people from the Pentagon, VA and DOD.

Mr. President,
May I just say that it is an honor and a pleasure to have you with us here on the board. 😛atriot:

Actually, Rick, I deal with the Casualty Officers at the DOD, VA and the Pentagon. I deal in the unfortunate phase of Life. We (7,000+ volunteers) are part of a national group serving in honor guards across the country.

So, I would not be so much of a Smart A**, but understand what I do is the last thing a family sees or hears to honor a loved one.

I serve as an officer of the group (VP of Operations).

That's gotta make jury duty seem like the proverbial "walk in the park", I'd imagine. Good on you.

And if you've ever been a smart**s in the past, it's flown right over my head. Granted, that's not all that difficult...

Don't forget about "jury nullification": http://www.crfc.org/americanjury/nullification.html

You do realize that letting on that you understand this is a great way to get tossed off of a jury lol.

The TMF just had a similar thread on this subject.

I probably won't get picked to serve, anyway. I never get to have any fun...

But if i do, I will certainly keep the whole "jury nullification" gambit under my hat until I've heard all the facts of the case.

Mainly I'm in it for the free buffet.

Kidding.

Not really.

god i wish i had jury duty. never had it before, but the minum wage you get is better than nothing now.

that sucks. the hollywood brother thought it was nice that the people at the courthouse had free food there.

the hollywood brother thinks that if there are people that like jury duty they ought to get more jury duty and the people that do not like it or can not serve well could get a little less. now the hollywood brother understands how important jury duty is but in this bad economy to lose time and pay from work when not all employers pay you for your jury time is very hard. the hollywood brother can understand both sides of the equation

The Philadelphia Courts have been paying only $ 9.00 a day unless you go past 3 days, then it's around $ 12.00 (I think).

If you're out of work, it sucks. Usually the employer takes the check and pays you for the day.

Federal court is a better gig, $ 40.00 no matter what plus whatever travel expenses you incur.

My next go at Jury Duty is in December. I just got the letter last week. This will be go number 4 for me. I served on two trials and was nullified once. I must say that I was rather insulted when I was.

Did it for 3 months before we moved from one county to another. I knew I would probably not get picked or would be eliminated anyway. Defense attorneys tend not to want educated people that can think for themselves. They want sheep they can easily lead off somewhere...

I'm 28 years old and I've NEVER been called ONCE. Weird no? o_o

I do believe you've just jinxed yourself in that regard. :stickout

(shrugs) Someone has to get chosen. Might as well be me once and awhile.

Fair enough, I just hear too many horror stories to wish such a thing on anybody. lol

Yeah. Well, I guess I'd be kinda honored in a way as it's a way of serving your community. I already volunteer at my local shelter/soup kitchen once and awhile. ^_^

As Rox said, it's a fairly safe and sane way to give alittle back to one's community, and that's a part of it. I give blood/platelets every so often, too. Just simple, helpful things that aren't any big hardship on me that by the same token can mean the difference in someone's living or dying.

I gotta admit, though, that I was kinda hoping that work would just treat it as an extra day off from the job that particular week, and that I'd keep my regular days off, too. It's just been a looong time since any time off from the grind. That would have made for 4-in-a-row away from the place. (sigh)
