This youtube channel has a whole collection of vocal tracks from the original recordings of the Carpenters. They put in a very stripped down drum and base track to keep time, but no strings or other accompaniment. It really highlights what an astonishingly clear and pretty voice Karen Carpenter had.

She was an awesome talent.....

I don't think there was a song I didn't like from the Carpenters.

I merely tolerated the Carpenters back in the day. Hearing this minimalist mix of that song makes me want to hear it over and over. Damn shame she passed the way she did. (Sigh) Just proves that pop stars are human beings, doesn't it?

On a brighter note, a few years back, a web site whose name shall not be mentioned was circulating the original 16- and 24-track master recordings (in WAV format!) of songs by Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Queen. Some interesting remixes came out of that!

Thinking about her struggle with depression made me want to hear this one without all the clutter around it. It's clear, especially with hindsight of course, that she was talking about the specific experience of her life.

We've Only Just Begun was part of The Boss and my wedding, and I was fortunate to see them in concert in Richmond, Ky. back then. Still one of my favorite sounds. Thanks for putting this up Jeff! And, by the way, missed Thursday evening this year, along with the party. Take care. Jim

We've Only Just Begun was part of The Boss and my wedding...

I'm certain it featured prominently in lots of weddings and relationships. How could a song like that not? (And not bad for a song that started out as lyrics for a commercial for a bank specializing in mortgages!)
