Quentin Tarantino is a renowned foot guy. Given Uma Thumann and Lucy Liu are in his latest picture, watch out for some foot scenes.

speaking of Kill Bill...

I'm not crazy about the trend of putting regular actors in movies that require them to use a lot of martial arts. I'd like to see Hollywood write a decent script for Jackie Chann.

can you just....

....imagine the possibility for dialogue?

lucy: uma. you bad girl. kiss my feet!

uma: no dice lucy. i tickle instead!

I know, wasn't the matrix funny? 🙂

Kill Bill?

I've heard that Sonny Chiba and Yuen Woo Ping handled the fight choreography for the movie. Anyone into martial arts films should remember Sonny from his cult films. He also has a role in "Kill Bill". Yuen Woo Ping is a well known martial arts film director and fight choreographer. Still the question remains can regular actors pull off the fights and make it look realistic?

Yes, I know about Sonny Chiba. His best known are "The Streetfighter" and "The Bodyguard." In fact, the movie that Kevin Costner's character was watching in "The Bodyguard" was "The Bodyguard." Chiba is a great martial artist. I don't think his English is so hot though, so he never had a much of chance to take a shot at making any martial arts films in America. He was in a movie with Roddy Piper once, which had potential, but it sucked overall.

I didn't care for the hokey martial arts in "The Matrix" and I'm not a fan of that movie.

As far as actors doing martial arts in films, Mel Gibson was convincing in "Lethal Weapon," but the difference was that the martial arts were not the focus of the movie. Sharon Stone also pulled it off in "Total Recall," but that was just one scene.

The Matrix started the trend of putting a lot of martial arts in films, and having regular actors train a little and do the fighting. The previews for "Kill Bill" show Lucy and Uma jumping all over the place in what looks like samari outfits.

Just an opinion, but I say **yawn**

KILL BILL!?!?

Oh, the movie. Whew, for a minute there I was afraid I'd have to catch the next train outta town😉! --Dr. Bill

LOL @ Dr. Bill. I'm down w/ Quentin Tarantino, but I hope this film is better than the T.V. trailers I've seen. They don't exactly have me chomping at the bit to see it. Maybe it's just tailored towards fans of the martial arts genre?

Warning:Spoilers

Caught Kill Bill earlier this evening and it was a wild ride. Definately a homage to those old chop-socky flicks. Same plotline and everything. Hero(in this case heroine gets royally screwed, spends much time training for their revenge, and then comes back to whup some ass. Big difference is that it's told in the non-linear fashion Tarantino seems fond of. Some may be disappointed that it stretches into two parts(finale is due Feb. `04, I think). Lotta fun, lotta blood. Uma Thurman has feet on par with mine on the ugly-scale. Coupla other foot-oriented moments throughout, too. Lotsa neat references to those old kung-fu flicks. Sonny Chiba steals his scene. Both the girls I was with instantly fell for him! So, go see it if you get the chance! Fun! Trailers for The Matrix 3 and Lord of the Rings 3 had us drooling, too!

Just saw it....

One of the most brilliant well thought out and directed pieces of work I've seen in years. I normally dislike the violent hack em up movies, but all of that became secondary to the story and the way in which it was told. The animation scene was superbly done in great comic book come to life fashion unlike the comic book wannabes like the Hulk.....

5 stars in my book! Glad to have the old Quentin back and can't wait for part 2.

Animation vs.Live-Action

Glad you pointed that up, Venray1. Somehow, I found the animated part more disturbing and less cartoonish than the live-action mayhem. I suspect Tarantino worked toward achieving that on purpose.

Kill Bill (saw it yesterday), Quentin Tarantino (a director who LOVES feet) and "regular people" doing martial arts kick ass, IMHO. 😀

I thought it was extremely lowbrow stuff done in a caring and artistic highbrow way. Gold plated bubble gum.

But I'm fine with that! Getting creative with the established conventions of film sorytelling as well as forming new ones, I really want part 2 to come out right now! And then a part 3, and 4 and 5 and 6 and 8 and 9 and, oh, wait, I forgot 7, and then part 10 and whatever comes after that. A nasty and violent film, but sometimes that's all that's needed for something remarkable....

Just saw the film. Lots of women's bare feet 😀, many times in close-ups. Extreme close-up of Uma's bare toes.

What a shame that Uma's feet aren't pretty. 🙁

Saw the movie myself this weekend-- incredibly violent, but very intriguing film, particularly with the music sound track.

I had one question, though: why did they keep bleeping the audio track whenever someone said Uma Thurman's character name, Beatrix?

Any ideas?

Well, not that I have any knowledge on this, it is strictly conjecture, but I think it might be just a stylistic touch added by QT; no "meaning" other than to add a litle mystery about the character, and to get people talking about the movie, outside of any context of plot. Director David Lynch noted in the past that art didn't have to mean anything, so QT might be exploring that.....

not quite Pulp Fiction, but still pretty good...

The credits at the end only list Uma Thurman's character as "the Bride."

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Tarantino certainly has a knack for making scenes of intense violence extremely entertaining and almost funny. I anxiously await vol. 2.

O.K., that was the bloodyist damned movie I've ever seen in my life. It was extremely entertaining, though. It was interesting to see American charactors behaving like those in classic martial arts films (e.g. being driven by revenge and taking pride in the art of fighting, etc.) Way better than any other american produced film from this genre that I've ever seen. QT comes through again. I highly recommend...if you can stomach the gore, that is (and the painfully long shots of Uma's crooked toes, :sowrong: )
