I don't know what kind of advice you're looking for. There should be some converters and kindle emulators if you wanted to check out if your file works.
If I recall you need to do some (very basic) xml coding so that certain things, such as touching a chapter, jumps to a specific part of the document. You set the locations in the document via word, something with tables. I forget exactly.
XML is a very easy coding language and there are guides elsewhere on the net. I don't remember very much, read one or two a few years back. Whatever guide I used had all of the xml code I needed but it was really simple stuff.
Also, you can't automatically set a kindle book to free; you'll have to generate an ISBN via another method before you can do that. Something else I read recommended putting the book on another, specific site and getting an ISBN that way.
