A giant has passed...

Larry Hagman, who played the conniving and mischievous J.R. Ewing on the TV show Dallas, died Friday at Medical City in Dallas, of complications from his recent battle with cancer, his family said.

He was 81.

“Larry was back in his beloved Dallas re-enacting the iconic role he loved most,” his family said in a written statement. “Larry’s family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for. The family requests privacy at this time.”

The role of J.R. transformed Mr. Hagman’s life. He rocketed from being a merely well-known TV actor on I Dream of Jeannie and the son of Broadway legend Mary Martin, to the kind of international fame known only by the likes the Beatles and Muhammad Ali.

I just awakened and read this. The news stunned and saddened me. The original Dallas was my all time favorite TV show. I had always felt that Larry Hagman was one of the top TV actors of all time, along with Carroll O Connor.

R. I. P, Larry, you will be missed.

RIP Larry....First got to know him because of I Dream of Jeanie.....

He was an awesome actor. Major Anthony Nelson and J. R. Ewing were radically different characters, yet Hagman portrayed them both flawlessly.

It's with the utmost admiration and respect that I bid Larry Hagman adieu with one final cry...

JEANIEEEEEEEE??!!

I'm pretty sure we'll all wake up and find out this is all a dream.

You think these folks are going to live forever and then find that they're mere mortals just like the rest of us.

Terribly sad news. J.R. Ewing is one of the best TV characters ever... I just told my parents (who are traveling out of the country) a couple days ago... They're huge fans; hell, Dad even lays his hat down brim up, cuz as J.R. says ""You always turn it over, or your luck will run out,"

They wouldn't let me watch the original Dallas when I was young- and then when I finally was allowed to, the show ended that year. When it was relaunched on TNT, I made it a point to go over their place to watch it with them - it's probably the one show we could all watch as a family.

Fortunately, I guess, I hear they filmed 7-8 episodes of Dallas for this coming season; so I'll definitely be watching J.R.'s last ride...

I remember when Dallas first hit the scene. My first thoughts were "He went from I dream of Jeanie to this??" I absolutely hated his character.....at first. Then my next thought was if I'm hating him, then he's doing his job! I was more of a Dynasty fan than Dallas but he did an excellent job as an actor and redefined him in entertainment history.

R.I.P. Larry Hagman........go in peace.:blackrose: :rose:
