Here are some pictures I drew during the week. The last one is a tickle picture. 🙂 These pictures are large, and so may need to be resized in order to view them at their actual size (otherwise they look all choppy).

#1) The Sword Dancer

Here's an oekaki of Motoko Aoyama (from Love Hina) in mid-movement as she trains. ^__^

#2) China Doll

Here's my first picture of Tsuruko Aoyama (Motoko's older sister) from Love Hina. I call this one China Doll because she's very beautiful, like a china doll (and no she's not Chinese, she's Japanese for those that wouldn't know). Don't let her soft, gentle appearance decieve you. She's a master swordswoman, is in charge of the Aoyama family dojo located in beautiful Kyoto, and is amazingly powerful and vicious in combat. ^__^

#3) Sister Sister

Here's an oekaki of Motoko and Tsuruko, the Aoyama sisters (from Love Hina) posing for a photo. ^__^

#4) No Excuses!

Here's one of Motoko incuring one of the wraths of her elder sister (a good tickling) for lying to her about being engaged to marry when she's not (Motoko lies about it in order to disqualify herself from inheriting the Aoyama family dojo/school because she's not ready for the responsibility yet). In the series Tsuruko has a menacing looking face when this happens, and goes medieval on Motoko, all but scaring the soul out of her after saying "no excuses", and thats when Tsuruko puts her foot down and does something. This is a more fun, cuter, lighter, and entertaining approach to that. ^__^

All of these pictures were drawn/colored on my tablet in Painter 9.

You become ever more polished and self-assured in your use of the Wacom tablet, Vlad! The linework is firm and clean, while displaying a pleasing sketchiness where appropriate. The colors are either lushly bold or whisper subtle, depending on need. The skin-tones show a soft, silky restraint, and the treatment of hair in all the instances (its fullness; its placement and indicated motion; that all-important sheeny highlight) is entirely masterful. I'm hard pressed to see any difference between these portraits and ones done entirely by hand, on paper with pencil and pen!

All pictures display a solid sense of warmth and playfullness. Fine instances of captured motion in "The Sword Dancer" and "No Excuses!". The latter nicely integrates the figures of Mokoto and her sister (a neat tickling scenario!), while the first offers body language with a guileless "oopsy!" quality that I find charming! In "China Doll", Tsuruko's attitude of feline nonchalance does indeed suggest a relaxed formidability. My favorite of the lot is "Sister, Sister". The obvious familial bonding and the picture's off-hand verisimilitude (as sister "squeezes" her way into the camera frame, bolstering the intimacy) are a pure pleasure. Plus, that quartet of limpid emerald eyes is to die for!

Very nice work! I don't know much about "Love Hina" (anime or manga), but these pictures make me want to learn more!

Though I could never give a detailed discription of my opinion like littlebigred could, I must say that thats a very, very good/talented job! 🙂 Its got that cuteness in it that will eat your heart out!

Ah, yes, lovely Motoko. I never can get enough of her and her sword slashes everywhre.

She can be pretty scary sometimes, but otherwise, she's got a feeling that's way different than the other Hina girls. Shinobu definitely's the cutest, but Motoko's where all my love's at. (damn, it's hard picking a girl you like in a harem anime. Mutsumi's definitely a runner-up.)

Thank you once again my friend, for both your excellent feedback and understanding. Its amazing how you're able to do this. Its not something everyone can do, or cares to do. It really makes the process of sharing more enjoyable every time, as it assures me (even if its just a handful of people on the net) verbally confirm what I was going for or something very close to it. 🙂 Your accuracy is incredible. And then theres what the viewer sees in addition to this, and you manage to pull something out of that too. 🙂

If you like romantic comedies, Love Hina is a good choice. The the manga is more indepth and accurate, the anime is also enjoyable. I'd suggest both to you if you ever become an otaku (anime fan).

Theres something to be said about every character, even the minor ones. I really like Tsuruko and Haruka, and fortunately, as an artist, I can fill in the blanks when I can. And it definitely helps that she's Motoko's sister (Tsuruko). Motoko had to grow up following the path and inspiration of someone, so Tsuruko is really important in forming part of who Motoko is and will be. The two characters add much substance to eachother, and when you put them together it works well.

What series are you fimiliar with, if any?

I don't own much anime (no manga at all)... I have seen a few things second-hand (DVDs and tapes owned by friends): Evangeleon (of course); Blue Seed; Helsing; Trigun (not all of it); GTO (not all of it); Escaflone; Black Jack; some of the toxic X-rated stuff... Urotsukidoji and Demon Beast Invasion (I own Urotsukidoji); a lot (maybe all) of the Studio Ghibli films; Project A-Ko; what there is of Tank Police (this I own); All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.... these are some of the things that occur to me right off the top of my head. I've seen a lot more, but it's been awhile; details are not fresh. And since I don't own most of them, they're not readily available to refresh my memory. I tend not to buy much anime, as it usually involves acquiring an expensive collection of volumes. Fortunately, a few of my friends are very deeply into it. I've gotten exposure throught them.

What can you recommend, Vlad? What are good choices for anime cultural literacy?

As I'm sure you already know, anime is very subjective. Anyone who would recommend anything would probably do so because they enjoyed it and can only hope another would understand or "get" whats going on or find the humor in something that may not appear to be humorous. Action adventures speak for themselves, but series like Love Hina are more subtle. Because its a romantic comedy its more about feelings and personal struggles and then coming together. "With a little help from my friends!"- Joe Cocker (singer)

So that one example of an anime that might turn off alot of people. Alot of people may even consider a series like this girly or that its meant for girls, which is really just a stereotype to begin with. That anything that doesn't blow up or die isn't for a man (of any age).

I actually think more of what type of person the watcher would be first before I recommend anything. I wouldn't want them to be wasting their time or money just because I said it was good.

What entertains you? What emotions do you want to feel? Be honest and as thorough as you like. 🙂

That's actually a tough question to address, as my interests can be fairly eclectic. I find the delicate moods of the Miyazaki films (My Neighbor Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service, say) entirely charming; I can just as easily glory in the ugly, misoginistic thrills the Toshio Maeda adaptations offer. I like domestic fantasies (Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, etc.) very much: I always thought Please Teacher looked interesting, though I've never seen any of it.

While I don't generally favor dark, fatalistic entertainment, I found Key the Metal Idol and Lain entirely wonderful (I suppose, in the end, they aren't that fatalistic, but they certainly are dark). I'd very much like to find more series that have this same tone.

My primary concern is to not commit myself to some lengthy series (like Ranma 1/2) that may never end and that must be seen in its entirety to fully appreciate. This is a lousy answer to your question, I know... it's not nearly thorough enough, and I certainly wouldn't expect recommendations based on it. I am curious to know which series you enjoy most, and for what reasons. Not a lot of examples, necessarily... your top five, perhaps. Not necessarily as recommendations; I'd just like to get your perspective.

Vlad, may I ask which tablet you use?
Being a newbie, I wanted to buy the Wacom Penpartner (http://www.vnunet.com/computeractive/hardware/2013549/wacom-penpartner) but I have no idea if it is any good.

I have a wacom intuos3 tablet (as I've stated before but you may not have seen). The intuos line of wacom tablets are specifically geared toward art, painting, and illustration.

Basically, I look at this way-- The graphire line of tablets are more multiple-purposed but don't specialize in one particular thing. Photoshop is much the same way, and so the program and the tablet go well together.

The intuos line of tablets are devoted more to art specifically. And its for this reason that Painter is probably the best program to use with this type of tablet, since Painter is basically the same way. Also, to lend credibility to this, wacom inc. has affilated itself with Corel (the makers of Painter) so its clear they have a partnership there and have built or intended the intuos tablets and Painter to go hand in hand and be used in tandem this way.

I'm not sure how many other types of tablets there are other than wacom tablets, but I wouldn't personally look into anything else. Wacom is the world's leading tablet maker and the quality is assured.

You're welcome. 😉

What would you be using a tablet for? Many people don't even use them for drawing or art.

Excellent pictures - congratulations x 1000. 😀 Those are going straight into my personal archives. 😉

I've said it once and I'll say it again: all my base really are belong to you.

Thank you. 😀

(If all of your bases belong to me, then what do you have left for yourself? 😛 )

I... Good point. Worth it, though! 😛 I may be baseless, but at least I have my archive.

But isn't that archive in one of the many bases you've already forfeited to me? 😛

What, are you carrying your archive on your back, like a backpack, or in a napsack like a hobo? 😛

Wow... I need to go and have a serious think... 🙁 Okay, maybe if I could have just one of my bases back, to store tickle pics in, please? 😛

A great series of drawings Vlad. You did a great job on the folds of the dress. It really looks 3-dimensional. Cute foot shot as well. The highlights in the hair and the eyes are a nice touch as well. Keep on keeping on with the tablet. 😀

Sigh...I am a cruel but generous man. Here.

*gives one base back to him* 😀

Thanks. 🙂

Yeah, I paid better mind to the pleating of their uniforms that I have before. But then again I've only drawn Motoko several times and Tsuruko never until now.

Yeah, this tablet makes drawing alot easier. It was a wise purchase. No more goodies for me this yeah though. Although the tablet cost me nothing, since I paid for it with part of my tax refund check. I didn't gain any money and I didn't lose any money.

Sweet! I wonder if a tablet would help me or make no difference from what I have done via pencil, ink marker, eraser and Photoshop. 😀

It depends. Can you upload some of the pictures you have done by hand? If I can see the quality of your lead work versus that of your mouse work, it would be easier to recommend. Either way, a tablet is a good idea because it means you'd be able to control it just like a pencil, and it wouldn't be all cumbersome like a mouse. Actually, you may be better off just buying the tablet, because then you'd be able to improve your basic lineart anyway.
