Luis Alverez was laid to rest today. He was an NYPD detective who spent months at ground zero as a first responder following 9/11.
He spent his last days in front of a House Judiciary Committee hearing imploring them to reauthorize the September 11th victims compensation fund. Looking frail, he told the panel "You said you would never forget. Well, I'm here to make sure you don't." The next day, he took his 69th round of chemo. The committee unanimously approved the bill which now awaits votes in the House and the Senate.
I hope the bill passes both houses. Many people spent months looking through rubble for survivors and then recovery efforts and clean-up.
Rest in peace Mr. Alverez, you did an incredibly difficult job at a very difficult time. Thank you.
