Mac Word Corrupted Files? HELP!

I was working for about an hour writing the next installment of KITTLETOWN when I realized that all of text was turning into numbers and symbols. Before I realized, 3/4 of my new story was gone and most of the material I had just written the past hour.

Can someone in the know please explain to me what had happened?

What version of Office are you using? Some of them aren't compatible with the newer OS on Mac... I've had a few very old documents that were corrupted, but never a new one that I was working on.

Have any backups? Also, try opening it in TextEdit or something.

Too late. The story (even the older saved part) was corrupting and spreading every minute, like a virus. I quickly saved what I had before everything was gone and quit the app. Then I updated Word. I'm afraid to open it with anything of value now. I have entire novels I wrote.
