Macs Vs. PC'S

I prefer PCs to Macs, but you should use whatever you feel most comfortable with. 🙂

I like Mac's, I've worked on them all my life for everything from writing to image manipulation. I have a dislike for the Wintel platforms, too buggy, too complicated, too many hardware conflicts.

Myriads

When I hear my PC-using friends complain about how they're tearing their hair out trying to get their computer to recognize the peripherals they're using, or how the latest Microsoft release is just a collection of bugs held together by snippets of code, or how yet another Windows/Outlook Express-targeted virus is munching its way through their hard drive, I just smile, nod sympathetically, and go back to my eMac.

All the good games come out for PC first...plus i just plain prefer pc's.

Oh also, they need new commercials for macs--their new ones make me a little bit more stoopid every time they're on.

Granted PC's can be a real bitch...but I wouldn't trade mine for a mac.

Shem, I love your description, which I fear is all too accurate ...

Love and laughter,

Could the question be a little less specific? For what?

For portable use? Mac. Much more self contained, and the most powerful configs are still light and easy to manage.

For video editing? Mac. Ask anyone who's had to edit on a PC, and you'll hear the same thing. I'll use Unix on a Solaris rig 'fore I'll suffer a PC.

Speakin' of Unix, what about Unix/Linux? Either. Needs tweakin' either way.

Database usage? Depends. For a large database, Intel box runnin' Unix wit' a SQL database. User's choice for front end. I'll take Mac for front end, personally.

Audio use? Mac. From recording to CD mastering, lyric sheets to cover art, all is easier and more powerful on Mac. Ask Digidesign, who has lead the computer-based audio recording genre since it's inception. Add Adobe in there for the art-based stuff.

Web design? Mixed bag these days. Still prefer my Mac, but now it can be done on any platform and processor.

Games? PC. More focus on games on PCs. Not surprising, 'cause of the price.

For price? I'd go wit' Windows on an Intel box. I'll work harder and pay for a Mac, though. I have an Intel box for compatibility work, but I can count the number of times I've used it, and it's obsolete already. The mac I got at the same time is STILL usable. Cheaper, but more disposable, if you go wit' Windows. I'll take longevity wit' my expenses, thanks.

Huh? Oh, I worked in the computer biz for 15 years before movin' to marry Kraftie. I know a wee bit about such things. Used every OS since DOS 3, Windows 2.0, Mac OS 5, and varied flavors of Linux since it's inception. Intel processors since the 8086, Motorola since the 68000. I've a vague familiarity.

When using your Windows config, and having to reformat your PC twice a year, remember that I have yet to reformat my laptop from last year. My previous laptop lasted me for 2 years without a format. None of my desktop macs have ever had to be reformated. I add multiple hard drives easily, and switch 'em from box to box, easily. I edit video, then audio, without suffering.

All that, and I can game on 'em. Fewer games than the PC, but enough to entertain me when I ain't wit' my wife, my kid, my family or my friends.

Yeah, I have both Macs and PCs. I prefer the Macs. I know both. I'll pay more to get more.

Fun topic. Ain't seen it go around in a while.

PC's in my mind are better for office work, home use, and businesses!

However Macs have far better capacities for graphics and sound. All music recording software on Macs are better programs than their PC counterparts!

If your into games like me you simply gotta have a PC. I think though the MAC OS is much superior to Windows.

Yeah I agree,

I forgot that part in my post, but PC's are superior for games!

I have had minimal success in Mac gaming!

I don't agree with you on that point.

I have a Pro-Tools system on my PC. I have also used it on a Mac. There is very little difference. Especially now that both versions can now read both .wav and .aiff files.

And I like being able to right-click. The less I have to use the keyboard during a recording or mixing session, the happier I am.

I think the reason that most of the creation software is on the Mac is that creative people (artists, musicians, movie makers, ect.) like to feel as though they are outside the norm, and so they use Mac's.

Also ForgottenTcklr, the Mac's are now using the same video cards that the PC's are. All the new Mac's come with an NVidia GForce card, just like the GameCube and the XBox does.

Thank you, DVNC, for the serious and detailed answer to this question. Ironically, I use a PC notebook for everything EXCEPT games, and I am leaning towards a Mac for my next one. One reason? I had to reformat this baby after 2 months!!! I do not want to go through that again!

My problem was price (I couldn't afford the extra $500 for a Powerbook) and availability (I live in a remote area where your choices are Compaq or Toshiba, and no repair facility for anything other than Wintels).

Thanks again,

Mistress, an exercise for ya - please compare your hourly rate to the time lost in reformating and reloading your software. Is that more or less than the $500 difference? Oh, and it's PAINLESS and simple to add drives to a Mac.

The PC *is* cheaper, though. Also, if you ever need service, Apple will have you mail it to 'em, and will repair it remotely. Just save the box it came in.

Guitman, I'm a musician. I've used Digi's software and hardware on both, and it IS largely the same (barring OS and plugin diffs). The auxilliary software isn't, though. I use more than Digi's software, and I *REALLY* hate the PC sequencers with a passion, though I've used a few. Cakewalk's a joke, and Cubase's PC software ain't very stable. Digi's sequencer is merely adequate, and I will always prefer a greater complexity. If you're just doin' audio, though, a PC will work, once you add a superior drive card and the right hard drives. Once you finish configuring a PC to equate to a Mac for Digidesign software and hardware use, though, there ain't a price difference worth notin'.

It *is* a good arg, though, if you prefer the PC features and don't like sequencing. I respect your arg there easily.

ForgottenTcklr, yours assumes that your office work/business use has no graphical use or need for such. PC use there is still weak. The CARDS are the same. The OS handles the graphics more poorly. Ask anyone doin' graphic design for specifics. I won't bore all wit' the gory details.

I like Scooby's argument best. He just likes PCs better. Nothin' to contest, there. I already respect Scoob, and if it works for him, cool.

For me, I'll be PowerBook user 'til somethin' better comes along. I've yet to see the PC laptop that comes close, and where they try, they're actually MORE expensive than my TiBook. I dig bein' able to do my internet work, my audio editing and recording, my MIDI sequencing, page layout, web design, finances, and writing from any room in the house, and anywhere I can wander. I can spend the day where ever I please, now that I've a spare battery. It's cool.

Bein' able to watch DVDs, widescreen, on flights is also cool. I can bring my own headphones and enjoy the flick in comfort, without all the bad edits.

Reformating issues, and the volume of Windows trojan horses and virus executables and scripts has kept me from wanting to touch that platform for personal use. My old PC is now a synth, using software I helped develop a long time ago. Haven't needed that extra synth in ages.

Typin' comfortably on the couch,

dvnc

I have owned a number of PC's over the years and have only had to reformat one of them once. I think if you use scandisk once a week and defragment once a month you usually won't have much of a problem. Of course maybe I have been lucky. In terms of external devices Macs almost always win hands down. So if you want to do a lot of video editing or sound editing or digitial photography get a Mac.

I am a total gamer so I basically am stuck with the PC. I do some video and sound editing as a hobby and thus I am forced to deal with driver issues, and compatability isssues. Overall though I can't complain although one of these days I would like to try a Mac to see what its like. I've only used them a little at work.

Good point about the sequencers dvnc.

I don't do much sequencing, but I tried using Cakewalk a couple of years ago, and it is a joke. I've never tried Cubase though. For sequencing MOTU is the king, and they're starting to get good at digital audio too.

About the configuration though, all I did was get more RAM and a fast recording drive. Tip to anyone thinking of doing music or movie editing on a computer, always use a separate drive or partition for your media files. If your main drive dies, or you need to reformat it for some reason, you won't lose your files.

Not that I'm downing Mac's, I just didn't want to have to buy a new computer and learn a new OS (especially since I just started getting good at Windows).
