Ross's trip to Toronto to visit John Fish was almost. "Routine"
Ross spent several hours visiting with John, and then went out with John and another surveyor, to look at wells a bit further from the city, which the geologists said were loaded with mostly natural gas.
Ross and John had lunch, and John said.
"Ross, this is all mainly routine. Do you have any idea when you will be going to OKC again?" John said
"I'm not sure. A couple of weeks probably. It does not matter , because, Fritz, Steve, you and I can just get on a conference call, and figure out a list of investors. After that we just do more conference calls, and Zoom shows, and sign up whoever. I cannot leave New York until I completely finish a project for Alan Hell. That is of utmost importance, and must get out of the door of my hands and my office before I can go anywhere. I pushed things around to come up here, but since this is a brief trip, it would not make a difference" Ross said.
"Ross, when we are done here, let me get you a car to take you to the airport. Please get on a flight, and go home. This way, you can finish Alan's project, and the sooner you do that, the sooner you can get back with the oil and gas things, get to OKC, and we can start planning heaven only knows what" John said.
John and Ross bumped fists. They finished lunch, and John called a car, to take Ross to the airport, and got on a plane back to New York.
When Ross landed at JFK, it was only 2 pm.
After that, instead of going home, Ross made a major mistake. He had not checked his messages, but, since Kayley was at a school planning meeting until six, he decided to go into the office.
When the staff saw Ross enter, they all had almost, scared looks on their faces.
Ross laughed. "I know I'm the CEO of this company. Its just me, Ross. I just came back to pass the time because I finished in Toronto early Kayley has a long meeting and wont be home until six, so I figured I would work on Alan's project" Ross said.
Victor approached Ross with a frightened look on Victor's face.
"Ross, can I talk to you about something in your office. Something, very very bad happened today while you were up in Toronto with Fish" Vic said.
Before Vic could take Ross into Ross's office and closed the door, the boom was lowered.
"Mister Ross C?
"I'm Ross C, what is this about?" Ross asked.
"I'm a process server, and you've just been legally served, regarding a lawsuit involving your client, Timothy Patrick. " The server said , giving Ross the papers.
Ross had a smirk on his face as he opened the envelope, thinking. "Okay, so what did Timothy do now?"
Ross opened the papers, and the smirk on his face faded to pale white.
"The suit" involved a company Tim owned in Pennsylvania, and Tim's counsel, was none other than Tom, from Alan Hell's Philadelphia office!
Ross's heart hit the floor. He said in the middle of the office. "Everyone just keep on what you are doing. I need to get in touch with Alan Hell:"
Ross dialed Alan Hell, who answered his cell phone.
"Are you home? Did you see what happened?" Alan asked.
"Of course, Alan,. Why do you think I called? I'm going to be very calm. What do you know about this?" Ross said.
"Only that a company of Timothy's in Pennsylvania got sued through the eyeballs, and our mutual friend good old Tom accepted the case without telling either one of us. I called Tom, and told him that he has to drop it immediately due to conflict of interest. Tom basically told me to shove it straight up my ass because while I am technically national chief partner of the firm, I am a New York lawyer, and not a Pennsylvania one, and that I have no right to tell Tom what cases to accept for that office. The Son Of A Bitch got around it with a technicality. Your buddy Tim did this to stick it to you for assigning his account and not paying attention to him. The case itself might not be that difficult to get out of , but the personalities cause this to likely be big trouble for both of us!"Alan said.
Ross sighed. "I cannot repeat what I want to do to Tim, because it is both unprofessional, and likely illegal" Ross said.
"I think both of us should calm down until tomorrow, meet for lunch, and see if we could and or can figure this out. Until then, as a lawyer, and your friend, do not talk to or respond to any communication from Tom or Tim. Anything in writing just forward to me, and I will deal with it. Flying off the rails is the worst thing we can do. It will compromise our positions, and that is exactly what both of them want" Alan said.
Ross and Alan agreed to talk the next day.
Ross could not handle another thing. He took the papers, and started for the door.
"I'm going home. Do not tell anyone where I am. I will explain this to Kayley when she gets home" Ross said.
Ross sat in an Uber on the way home, in an almost mummified state. If he was allowed to drink and did not have the conditions he did, Ross swore he would get drunk. He was not in the mood to go to the Queens casino as he thought that would be a stupid way to react to this.
Ross simply went home, stripped to his boxer shorts, went into bed, and waited.
Around six, Kayley came home.
"Are you in here?" Kayley asked
"I'm here. Go look at the papers on the nightstand. A whole heap of trouble might be coming from all directions" Ross said.
Kayley turned on the light, and silently read the papers.
"This is all ridiculous. Why would all this happen?" Kayley said calmly so as not to rile Ross up even further.
"Alan Hell says that Tom did it to flex Tom's muscle as Senior Partner of the Philly office, and that Alan cannot involve himself in deciding whether or not the firm accepts the case because Alan is not a PA lawyer. Tim did it to be an immature asshole because I have not been paying attention to him. People never change, Kayley. Alan and I agreed that we would both think about this for 24 hours at least, and then meet in the next day or two to decide how we should both deal with this. Damnit! Just while I'm in the middle of working on the biggest project of my career for RossShell, making major progress, focusing, and almost ready for the project to be out the door in short order, this has to happen. Damnit, Kayley, Damnit all!" Ross said.
Kayley undressed to boxer shorts and a t shirt and cuddled up against Ross.
Neither husband or wife had eaten in hours. Neither were at all hungry.
Their cell phones as always, were in bed next to them
Ross and Kayley hoped to Heaven that no one would call.
It was like, Ross, Kayley, and Alan's paths had come to a screeching halt
Was the situation as serious as Ross and Alan feared? Was there a way through? Would there be a way for Alan and Ross to get Tom and Timothy to listen to reason, or for Tom to negotiate a quick settlement with the party who had sued Tim in the first place? Alan and Ross were both furious with both Tom and Tim for this move! What could be done personally about that between the four men?
All of those very complex issues hopefully could be figured out.
