making clips...

I have the standard DVD drive on my PC, and have a couple of DVD's with some mainstream tickling in them. My player (Intervideo WinDVD) will let me make clips but (1) they have no sound and (2) are saved in GIF format.

Any suggestions on what I can go to record clips off them without spending the proverbial arm and a leg for software/hardware?

Some people I know like Virtual Dub, a complicated but free program from www.virtualdub.org
