How could something this huge just "disappear" from radar and still hasn't been found without a trace? With all the satellites in orbit that hardly miss a license plate on a car, how could this thing just vanish?

Well, it didn't. It went somewhere. If it exploded in the air, it would have been seen from anywhere. That is a high-traffic area in the world.

I can only think it must have gone down somewhere over the ocean. Like you say planes don't just disappear! No doubt in the next couple of days they will start finding some debris. Sad shit man. Nice thought with a 27 hour flight to NZ ahead of me tomorrow...

Yeah, my guess is that it crashed into the ocean because I feel like people would have reported by now if the plane had crashed on land. Between the oil slicks they found and I believe I heard they found a piece, maybe a door, of the plane floating off the coast of Vietnam, that's probably what happened.

I'm more curious about the 4 people with stolen passports that paid for their tickets in cash at the airport. Seems weird...

Really? I hadn't heard that! That is very suspect though...

Neither the object nor the oil slicks came from an aircraft. This is a mystery indeed.

Damn, really? I mean, I can't think of any other explanation than it must have gone down in the ocean. I feel like if it crashed on land, someone would have witnessed or seen something, and if it landed somewhere else and there are survivors, surely someone of the 200 something people on board would have tried to call for help or contact someone?

Still crazy. Reminds me of that DB Cooper thing a while back.

Even if it crashed into the ocean, wouldn't there be something like a GPS,or some sort of locator thing?

The simplest explanation is that it was blown to pieces over the ocean. There is a lot of water out there and it is not clear how long an oil slick will stay in place to be found. 🙁

This is just so weird. An entire plane just dissapers without a trace? Even if it blew up into pieces, youd still think youd find a decent amount of debris.

They determined that the oil from the slick actually came from a cargo ship. The
two people with fake passports had their tickets purchased through a Thai travel
agency by an Iranian national. I'm sure that part is all a coincidence, though. They
are supposedly checking out some more found airliner parts, but no word on the
findings yet.

Big ocean. Tiny plane (in comparison).

Odds are a crash into water due to some catastrophic system failure or pilot error, and a very very fast sinking. It will be hard to find, like that plane that went down between Brazil and Europe a half decade back, that took a year or two to locate.

Myriads

It's a bit grim I know but have you seen what happens to a plane that hits water at high speed? Not a lot left of it at all. Combine that with the kind of currents you get around that part of the world and you start to get an idea of what has happened.

With all the satellites in orbit that hardly miss a license plate on a car, how could this thing just vanish?

As we aviation buffs know, unfortunately the so-called "Next-Gen" GPS-based aircraft tracking system is far from being fully implemented. It would have been especially helpful in this tragic case too since, unlike the current radar-based system where planes have to be tracked passively and you're S.O.L. with vast stretches of the world's oceans not able to be covered, under Next-Gen a.k.a. ADS-B aircraft essentially report back their own positions constantly to GPS satellites. Thus wherever MH370 last was, it would have left an electronic trace--if the new system were in place. 🙁

And a little red meat for all you conspiracy theorists and Truthers: the idea that the U.S. government might actually have super-classified spy satellites so sophisticated they could have recorded exactly what happened to this plane but the info. has to be sat on for fear of revealing too many "secrets."

I feel like if it crashed on land, someone would have witnessed or seen something

Yes, one would think so, but it could have gone down in a sparsely-populated South Asian jungle, and maybe immediately sunk right into the moist terrain as airplanes crashing into Florida's Everglades have been known to do.

Even if it crashed into the ocean, wouldn't there be something like a GPS,or some sort of locator thing?

Yes, there are emergency locator transmitters which keep emitting a signal after a plane goes down--on land, that is, but crashing into water can mess things up. They also have underwater locator beacons for situations like that, but the signals from those are tougher to pick up, as you might imagine if the thing is sitting under several thousand feet of ocean water.

This really isn't that big of a mystery. The ocean is vast and inconceivably deep and planes that crash into it often disappear. It would be more amazing if a plane went down "somewhere over the ocean" and somehow someone actually found it.

The fake passports are apparently very common between drug smuggling, people smuggling, and various other criminal activities. There was an article saying the last big plane crash in that area, last year in India I think, had ten stolen passports on its manifest.
