Statement from Dr. Maya Angelou’s Family:
Dr. Maya Angelou passed quietly in her home before 8:00 a.m. EST. Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.

I read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" as a freshman in college. I always appreciated her unique point of view and humor. She will be missed - as an author and a person.

I had the experience as you, being exposed to her writings as a young person thanks to a good English teacher. Some lines of her poetry were so pointed & poignant, cutting thru the flowers and fluff that filled much of the other poetry I had to read in school. It's a shame it takes the event of her death to get me to revisit what I have already read and discover what I have not.
